Wanted: Body ID tags

After some Body ID tags that sit in the spare wheel well to suit a 58/59 beetle.

Build number should be between 1 774 680 - 2 801 613

In Five Dock, Sydney

thanks

Isn't this illegal? I thought swapping compliance plates for registration is wrong?

Whoa!!! hang guys. On early vdubs the plates under the spare wheel are NOT compliance plates. They give the type and weight of the vehicle and although they have a space for the Chassis number, most of the plates I've seen are not stamped.

Isn't the chassis number under the back seat?

That is the individual ID of the vehicle Yeah?

LOL I was wondering why there were 11 replies :)

i thought this was pretty funny... yep i'm masterminding a vintage beetle rebirthing scheme because there is a lot of $$$ to be made rebirthing 40 year old cars that drop oil and smell funny :) damn i knew someone would catch me!

This is for my 58/59 which is missing its body tags. It is going on a 1970 pan and will be registered as a 1970 because of the VIN on the chassis. it will be engineered for a body swap as well as rear discs etc. The only reason I want body tags is so i can give it an identity. The body itself is missing its original bonnet, doors and has some bits cut into it so it feels a bit empty :( The old body tags have the original chassis number on it (which it was separated from a long time ago prior to me purchasing it) and they also say "made in w.germany" :D

I bet that when i go for a blue slip, i think they'd be more interested in looking for rust than the VIN on a 40 year old car. The only reason someone would swap body tags is if they wanted to evade ADR rules or something. ADR's only came into effect in 1968 (i think) and the first ADR was for lap belts. Compliance plates came sometime in the 70's i think. Even if the plates were swapped there is still the VIN on the chassis under the rear seat.

anyway if someone has them please contact me!

you don't need a body number for rego, only the Chassis (which is considered the VIN) number. So as long as the number under the seat (and engine number) is legit everything else is academic.

The chassis (floorpan in the case of the beetle) is what identifies the car. a rolls royce body on a hilux chassis is a hilux.

This is also why you need to be very careful when swapping pans or buying pans on an exchange basis, as it's no longer your car's identity.
