Type 3 tar floor mats?
Hey all, Im biting the bullet and taking up the tar floor lining under the carpets in the squareback. Does anyone know if you can get replacements? Or
what else could you use?
Cheers

I've done the same thing in both my fastys and found rust underneath. They may have been a good idea when new, but I reckon all they do is hold
water underneath and accelerate rust.
They're actually made of layers polystyrene foam and bitumen and they're bugger to get off. Use a paint scraper to scrape off the foam and most of
the bitumen. Once that's done, use a solvent based grease remover or turps to help dissolve the remainder of the bitumen still stuck to the floor.
Count on a good days work to do the whole floor.
As far as replacements go, I didn't bother. All the foam panels are is sound deadener, so I just repainted the floor with a good paint and covered
that with a brush on sound deadener. You can buy acoustic insulation panels if you want them, but make sure they're sealed around the edges to stop
water seeping underneath.
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.

Cool, thanks for that.
Took me about 2.5 hours to get mine up, I was lucky, some parts came off in big chunks.
I just finished stripping the floor mats off and found that the rear passenger side is like swiss cheese! I think I will have to replace the whole
half pan.
Where can I get one?
:cry

replacement panel you could try at a wreckers...
but i had the same trouble dude...and infact mine looked just like that....i scrubbed the crap out of it with a wire brush on the drill....washed with
soapy water....dried....wire brushed again....washed, dried then i rust converted it with this industrial grade converter from bunnings, after that
dried...i layed ormanoid in there...thick...then ontop of that, i used that shutz spray stuff with the special bitumen gun....very
nice...impenetrable...plus i covered all my little holes with ormanoid gutter spot patch tape..also from bunnings...
welded a bent plate over all that....sealed it with silastic...ormanoid again....
sounds a bit drastic...but i didnt have a welder...and didnt know how long it was gonna be till i got one and a repair panel...

Yeah, I was thinking of killing the rust and fiber-glassing the whole lot, then giving the whole underside of the car a coat of underseal.
Damn these hard to find panels!
