I haven't looked that closely, but as they sell left and right ones the answer would have to be no!

i know they are different shapes the left and right ones but what i want to know is can they be swapped so that the exhaust flange faces toward the front of the car instead of towards the rear.

No. They are asymmetrical as the exhaust inlets are way over to one side. The air inlets from the fan shroud are also slightly different (I think)

OK, possibly. But where do you plan on getting your fresh air supply from?

Hey Barls, I know what your asking, but it won't work. With the offset in the pipes between the head and the heat exchanger part, if you spin it around and put it on the other side, the pipes will be too close to the case and push rod tubes.
Also the flange that bolts to the head has offset holes, but I suppose you could remove tham and swap them also?
The ones you have look cool though.
What's the fan housing, modified doghouse?
I have seen a similar setup also where the gut's of the generator are removed (as in just there for fan) and the type 4 alternator is still used.

ill just have to fix that small problem then when i do it. the fan housing is a chopped 1302 sbug one. it was chopped to clear the maniflods. ill be going to a t1 55 amp alternator in the rebuild. the boxes look cool from a distance but the closer you look the dodginess shows

Have a read of HYPOVW's post on his Oval drag car build up recently. He did just what you want to do with his custom engine pipes.

I can't see from your pic how you are getting the hot air out and into the cabin. If you turn the pipes around-you can still fabricate up a surround like you have already done.I have the same issue with heat for mine.I have made up new engine pipes and have to make a chamber to collect the hot air-but I am using a Porsche fan and shroud,so have no outlet tubes for fresh air. Will probably use the heater assist fans from a Type4 Bus somehow.I sent some Type4 heater boxes to Mike Sharp for him to modify and he made the fresh air inlet pipes go back along side the boxes and finish not far from the outlet tubes.I was supposed to put some outlet pipes at the back of the Porsche shroud and run them out thru the front breast plate(where the throttle cable comes thru).I have fuel lines and throttle linkages across there which makes it too crowded. So will try the electric fans to supply fresh air and will be able to put it all underneath out of sight.

ive got the electric fans under the rear seat as well as a different fanshroud ie a 36 hp with the fresh air tubes. im planning on doing the surrounds again. the fans work really well.
heres my heater fans

Those fans are exactly what I need.Never thought about anything like that-didn't know they even existed. Will be at the Boat shop in the morning on the prowl.Do you think they would move enough air to feel it at the demisters? Couldn't see your 36hp fan shroud on the links. If the fans are big enough-can use a draw thru system and recirculate cabin air thru custom made heater boxes.

thats the idea. im only using the connections on the shroud cause i dont have anything else to connect the pipes to and actually had them just floating in the engine bay before the new shroud. trut me the fans are strong enough they move enough air to have the car so warm i can drive with the window down on the highway.

Barls, on page 77 in May's Hot VW's there is a picture of an engine from a KG (type 1) that just uses another length of exhaust tubing that runs right along side the exhaust. I dont know how effective it would be but it looks simple as.

Barls-just found one at the Boat place-cost $40 and he only had the one.In his catalogue for the specs it moves 138 cubic feet a minute at 4.5 amps. With one each side should be enough to lift your wig off-well done.
