external oil cooled bugs
has anybody got info on, or preferably photos of instaling external oil coolers on beeetles, the ones that use those 8inch thermo fans? and where is
the best spot to mount them |

i run a external cooler above the gear box. It is extra aboe the std dog house one. O used some alloy bent in elbows to hold the top, then some
threaded rod mounted down to hold the bottom. i found the engine runs very cool, and in winter i don't need the extra cooler.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

was just reading up on gene berg web site , said that they had done numerous tests on modified cooling systems, with the best result coming from
standard dog house type fan, second best was standard fan shroud. also said that when changing from standard fan to wider dog house type to use
vented deck lid to allow more air in... |

Having run a 1776 myself with and without an external oil cooler, I would say they are fantastic. Yes keep the doghouse cooler, but the extra with the
thermo fan really helps the engine run nice and cool.
Mine never got past 90deg even on a hot QLD day

You can get an inline thermostat that allows oil to bleed past, but doesnt fully open until it reaches 180ish F - so it bypasses the cooler when the
oil is cold (Bugpack make one). You can also get a thermo switch for the fan so it only switches on when the oil gets hot.
