Not VW but an absolute classic piece of Australian motoring history here.

hehehehe.

I didn't think enthusiast and camira went together....?

the only camira enthusiast i know of is the one that turns
them into little cubes that u then use as a coffee table.

Sure its seen heaps in its time....

Poor camira, lets face it. Holden f**ked up bigtime and even
they admit it.

But it's a Ricky Racer job. That's gotta make it worth, ooh 30 bucks.

Hey, the (original) Gemini's were shit too. They had a real bad habit of rusting from the inside out. People didn't know they had bad rust til the car snapped in half.

The Camira goes under the catagory of;
"WE JUST SHOULDN'T HAVE BUILT THAT".
Most companies have one.
Ford had the Edsel, Chev had the Corvair, British Leyland still piss themselves laughing when you mention the TR7.

There's a big difference.

The P76 was a good car, just unpopular. A lot of that was to do with timing.
They finally introduced an eight, just as a fuel crisis hit.

It was more a case of shit happens than the car being shit. They are still a good motor.

aye, p76 wasnt a piece of shit... one of the guys on here recently got one!!

as for camira!? haha, my mate had a beauty...

i met him as we were both moving into a mutual friends new house... started talking about his 'top of the line luxury camira' like he was one of those intense freaks that really have a love for something really shit... then he pointed down the driveway to the car i thought had been stolen and abandoned on the street and recognised it was a camira! he had a good laugh though when i told him i thought it was abandoned, he was just taking the piss...

anyway, this historic piece of australian motoring had been bought with rego for like $300 off of a mate... its factory options were deflated bald tyres, different coloured bashed up panels and doors, a window that wouldnt wind up and missing/ half detached door moulds and belt moulds...

inside the story got better haha..

he had piled up so much shit, wrappers, bottled, bags etc in the passenger footwell that it was a compacted mass the height of the seat and when you opened the door nothing fell out, there was just a straight flush cube of compacted rubbish...hahah

in the back seat was a styrofoam box with car parts in it and various flano shirts across the back seat fighting for attention with more rubbish..

in was a beauty of a car...hahahaha

in the year and a half he owned it he never filled the water or oil though, he was just waiting for it to blow up but it never did, just soldiered on.. as long as you kept it revved above 2k all the time that is...

he would park it ANYWHERE and leave the keys in the ignition or on the seat with the windows down (they were always down, even when it was parked and storming outside..) and we would always come back to find it waiting patiently for our return...

driving the thing was a surreal experience... especially after he had crashed it! had put it up on a medium strip and dinged up the front and sump but busted the headlight.. the head light still worked without the lens but pointed skyward! also one deflated tyre got a big cut in the wall but was still holding air so it was my mates WISE decison not to inflate it so it wouldnt pop!!hahaha.. so it sat at about 7psi from then on...

once he came to watch me play footy at samford one night, bringing the shitbox, and proceded to get pissed.. after a big game i was fucked and discovered my pissed mate, meaning i have to drive his car home in the wet, dark and hilly terrain back to narangba...

thought i was gonna die

as well as contending with the drunk rolling around on the back seat i had a car whos wheels were bottoming out on corners and gullys, a sick engine i had to keep revved up, bad brakes, and a headlight that lit up all the trees above me like i was gettin abducted by aliens, a wet seat and a soft wet spot in the carpet meant to be the accelerator pedal... couldnt see it or feel it, just a spongy bit in the carpet that i jammed my foot in.....

what a car....

he drove it to toowoomba once, up the ranges and collected his 350 chev from a mates... opened the boot and wedged it in, half hanging out but goin nowhere!! hahaha.. he made it back fine too!! he was just praying it wouldnt break down and hed have to leave it with the V8 hanging out the back for all to see hahahah

he finally gave it up when it was nearing its last legs.. we were going to set fire to it and drive it over the side of a cliff face at a quarry but thought better of it... we just wanted the old girl to go out in style...

ended up givin it to the wreckers for free, was suprised they took it! hahaha...

rip my camira friend, we miss you... hahaha

If you've ever been in a sorted Gemini, it's the closest thing to a go kart for the road.

Throw into a corner at any speed, impossible to roll it.

Good reliability too.

$40K ? Nah, needs very little and is cheap as chips.

The cooper s belongs in a museum, too valuable to fang in and too fragile and expensive for parts. Fun tho.

Hard to believe now, but at one time Holden (and Chrysler) actually made
some great cars.

This sound like a typical Camira. :D

Q: Hi there, Great Car !!! Just wondering what mechanical work needs to be done? Thanks heaps .. Sheila. answered on: 05-Jan-05
A: The vehicle needs suspension work and the motor has some big end and rod noise. There is a possible rear main seal oil leak

The guy down the road has a collection of 7 or 8 late 70's chrysler galants decorating his front yard......now there was a piece of garbage!

As for the P76, you had to own one to appreciate it. I had a yellow V8 4 speed nick named 'The Lemon'. I use to drive it from Newcastle to Brisbane and back for weekends and had an extra 200 litre fuel tank so I didnt have to stop. It handled well compared to the Holden and Ford of the same era.
The Lemon came to a sticky end when my father was driving it and was stoped in traffic and a milk tanker rear ended it at around 80kph! The boot lid ended up in the back seat and it rear end crumpled about two feet but the 200 litre tank in the boot sitting over the axle was still un touched!

I couln't find another one so I replaced it with a CM Valiant sedan which was the next best thing!
