The Wave

How does this mysterious hierachy work?
Kombi drivers wave to kombi drivers, but not to beetles or other vw's and vice versa. :kiss
I have been know to wave to all vw's (on the odd ocassion) and have recieved some startling reactions.
So come on give it to me who do you and who don't you wave to and why.

Everyone with a VW should wave and most times do wave to other VW drivers.

This has been going on for years.... its not something new.,

In my experience only three types wave:

people who drive aircooled VW's

people who drive old Morris Minors

all people who live in the "bush"

I wave to any VW I see, except when I don't see them, or when I see late models in the city. For some reason a lot of new VW owners just buy 'a car' not a real VW.

I definitely get more return waves from other kombis. Even when driving the bug and waving to other bugs, I don't usually get the same kind of response as in my kombi.

Just so everyone knows - if you see someone in a Land Rover Discovery waving at you it's me.
I just do it on reflex before I remember I'm not in the bug/kombi.

I get some really confused looks.

I almost had the opporunity to give you the wave Kruizin, I passed through your area on the weekend. Mirboo North to be precise.

What we should do is start a part of the forum for random sightings, like a month or so ago there was a white Kombi at the end of my street with an Aussieveedubbers sticker on it, I'd like to find out who that is.

I wave to all aircooled, people hardly ever wave back from kombis though. Usually type threes do, prolly cos there aren't so many of them and they are surprised that people know they are vws.. thats my theory anyway. I reckon I only get waves back from beetles half the time. I used to pass a girl every morning driving to work in the other direction... I waved for about a week, but after no response I gave up.

If I don't have time to wave I usually smile.

Saw another aircooled beetle last night, although I think it might have been the same one I saw the first time. Only 2 weeks till I come home to 'LOTS o' Vee Dubs'!! :D

Kombi ownership is a brotherhood.

99.9% of people who drive kombis, OWN a kombi because they WANTED a kombi.
That is not always so with a beetle owner.

I wave to the aircooled brigade. Beetle & Type 3 owners sometimes wave back, but other kombi owners rarely fail.

I have to sit on my hand when I'm in the wife's nissan......

To all aircooled VW's, new ones, not, because they are usually looking the other way.

To anyone showing an interest in the car as we drive along, often kids and their parents.

Often to young people in the street who are reacting to seeing Bel etc:)

Don't know why people do not wave....
And you guys think you get strange reactions... at least when waving from work vehicles and stuff you have at least 4 wheels...
You should see the reactions I get when on my Motorbike...
And I can't sit on my hands with that!!:repuke

:party

But what I find the worst is when in my bay windowed Kombi the bikes don't wave back

I wave to all aircooled vw's. My cousin being a Honda bloke freaks out the amount of times we get waved at in the notch!!! hehehe

Cheers!

I only wave to other air-cooled kombis and 99.99% of the time they wave back. The other .01% they are adjusting the radio. Its because fellow kombi drivers know that they are driving the greatest car ever. Its not so much of a hello wave but one of acknowledgement that we both know the rest of the world is nowhere near the level of sophistication we are :D

I never used to get any waves in the type 3, not even from other type 3's.

I would wave to the 2 ovals that I see around here regularly, except I dont think they would notice.

I reckon from all the other Kombis I have waved to there are very few instances where I have not had the return wave :) Waving to Beetles the response has not been anywhere near as good and sometimes disheartening so instead I just do an old fashioned smile with hand at the ready in case a wave ensues.

Amazer, the oval guys can't wave back cause they are trying to drive with one hand and block their ears with the other :D

In Melb I probably get more waves and points from kids sitting in the back of cars at intersections. Even had cars drive up beside me and give the thumbs up.
Older beetles always wave. Kombies never, yet anyway. Cant remember the last time I passed a T3 around these parts.
Had a wave from an old Morris Minor on Westall Road.

I live in the country and as a rule, you ALWAYS wave to someone from the same town(same numberplates), then, very often/most of the time(basically when you are not doing something else or daydreaming), you wave to people with coutry number-plates also. The thing is, I don't think my age-group is doing it much nowadays. And of course, my problem is that I don't even have country number-plates on my baja yet; so even people from my town don't know me .

I haven't had anyone wave back at me in any VW yet :jesus. Usually, the kombi drivers are smacking the kids in the back;)

I thought that everyone waved at VWs becasue they are that sort of car. I made a point of waving to EVERY car I passed on a 3 1/2 hr trip. I would have got less than ten waves. But tragically, this truckie waved at me the one time when I was fiddling with the radio and by the time I saw him do it and looked -up, he was gone:(. It put a downer on the whole trip.

The only people I ever get waves from are little kiddies. Their parents are quite shocked to see me (a P plater) actually wave back really enthuisiastically. Even fellow p-platers rarely wave.

Long post... but it is a very sad world looking out the windscreen of my baja. :(

I didn't knowyou could get localised no. plates.

I had a fair few waves from truckies on my trip to sydney, there was this one guy who stayed the same speed as me for about an hour, he kept laughing at us not being able to pass him.
