Broken stuff list....

Ok guys and gurls...
Make me feel better.
Throw up a list of the stuff youve broken, and the time you have broken it in.

Heres broken stuff/problems for the last 3 months.
*Fuel gauge - still broken (needs fuel sender replaced) Ran out of fuel more times than i can count....
*Zorst on the 1916cc - extractors bent and wouldnt go back on - backfired everywhere,
*Some gear to the diff sheered 4 bolts in half and broke the rest. Tow truck required in peak hour
*Coil died.... took me all weekend to figure it out... :(
*Carbies filled with crap - hesitation and more back firing...
*Clutch cable snapped.
*Accelerator cable snapped twice in 2 days.... Coil slipped and burnt the cable in half both times.
*Lost 3 light globes....
*Blew an amp (stereo)
*Speedo cable broke. Turns out it seized the speedo too (still not fixed).
(I know ive missed a few more things - just cant think of em)

At this point i said screw it! And brought my mechanics worked 2180cc ex drag strip engine.
It went in and then immediately
*broke an engine mount. :(
*Tacho suddenly doesnt work any more - mechanic says dont rev it over 3 grand - well how the fark am i supposed to watch that when he broke my tacho?!?!
Anyway after three days the alternator shroud finally rattles its bolts loose that werent done up properly nor the alternator strap. This results in the alternator free spining around, and clean snapping the alternator stand in half!! Also ruined the fan, and a couple of blades went thru the alternator and killed it too!
By now im like :o:mad::mad::mad:
And i was at my mechanic like :cussing

So i lose the car again.
Get it back for not even two weeks and guess what?
*Crank splits in half!!
:cussing:cussing:cussing
:cry

It also managed to get a hole in one head!! Probably due to the fact that i was running leaded petrol and my mechanic tells me after the engine is stripped that i should have used unleaded!!
BIT LATE!!!!

So this happens just after xmas - its been like 5 weeks and im still waiting for the crank to come in from overseas so he can fix the head and put the engine back together and put it back in.
In the meantime after being without a car for another week he put in a slowass stocko 1600cc (well u try going from a balltearing 2180cc back to stock :o) which - last week - the alternator died!
Cant even listen to music and barely getting to work every day!!
Have to charge the battery every night just to get to work the next day coz by the time i get home the battery doesnt have enough power to start the car!!

Anyone else get close to this?!?!?
This is all for one car in three months...

Sorry for the long post - but im so :cussing:cry:puke

The twincab in my Avatar was a week into my ownership when a valve seat came out of the head and jammed the valve open. Someone else was driving the car at the time. I put another head on and about a month later was doing some bush bashing 20mins into the bush at Mt Cotton when I broke all the teeth off the pinion in the gearbox. Spent the next four hours changing the gearbox in the bush......:cry

I will take my hat off to anyone who has had worse luck than you Quickbug.

My problems sound pretty minor after reading yours. I had only had my baja for about 2-3 weeks and had only driven it around eight times when the clutch cable slipped off the hook. No-big-deal, I just put it back on, fired her up and BLAM! My throw-out bearing had a fit, crapped itself and exploded. We got the engine out and there was chaos in there. The ball-bearings, sleaves etc had broken the bearing forks, ruined my clutch plate and stuffed my pressure plate too. It was easy enough to fix, but just a bit disheartening. It was almost as if the car didn't like its new owner. :(

Fixed anyway and I am giving it a makeover to get some brownie points.

Good luck with it all!

LOL thanks Pat!
If it makes u guys feel better than good!
Glad i could make things seem better.
By the way - the car was only just put on the road at the begining of all this...
:(

Sounds like you had some similar 'new' car trouble Jamox.

I put a new fuel guage in the bus a few years ago, and the fuel guage worked for a few days and went kaput
years later, put a new VDO sender and another guage in it and it worked for a while, and then kaput.
So now I have another guage, and it is playing games sometimes, but at least it works sort of OK
The beetle - fuel guage don't work either.
Needless to say they both have reserve 5L cans of fuel in the back.

major ones. Wrecked a set of shocks, when replacing, found a pool of oil in the strut and spent 2 days trying to get a old bush out, then once that was fixed, bent an exhaust valve(engine was 3000k old), towed the car home from qld raceway, the car rolled back on the trailer and bent a guard . borrowed my ex gf track car(fully worked 2ltr escort), and lost a water pump on the way to the hillclimb the next day(damm water cooled cars:mad:), trailered that home to. 3 weeks later spun the car on some oil at the hillclimb, wrecked the front end. borrowed mums car (another 74 Lbug), to get to uni, that died, with really worn main berings, and a piston that knocked in the barrel. thats the last 6 months!!! add on to that minor things like having the indicator wires hooked up backwards by the panel beater and the fuse went everytime i used it, that took 1 week to find etc etc. news year resolution that my car will work perfectly for one year!!!!

Never had as much bad luck in one hit, gotta feel for ya Quickbug :(:(:(:(

Mostly self infilcted casualties on my bug but so far,

1 x 1200cc engine
1 x original 1959 gearbox
2 x 1600 cc twin port engine's
One with totally destroyed bearings and aprox 1/8 inch end float (still did 80mph tho :) gotta love these things)
Other one had a failure of one of the cam followers which wore the cam lobe almost flat :)

Both engines did better than 60k miles tho :)

4 x clutch cables
1 x clutch fork
1 x accellerator cable
2 x front gearbox mount
then solid mounted gearbox and tore the mount from the floorpan, added more metal to the mount, tore it free again, added more metal hasnt moved again yet.

1 x rear wheel rim
Spun going around a roundabout (gotta love those :) )
right infront of my boss and buckled the rim

and finally rebuilt the current 1835 as it was droping 500ml of oil every week

It is all fun tho :)

Isnt half of the fun fixing them

2 fuel pumps died. 1 mech 1 elec.
1 dizzy cap cracked
fan belt spat and chewed.
pushrod bent
valve seat dropped.
second gear stripped.
2 windscreens.
ignition switch.
and few lost petrol caps!

I reckon thats pretty good for driving 20-30 year old cars. Especially since most of my problems stem from abuse or my own bad workmanship.

sound's expensive

Hey Quickbug,
all this sound's really expensive.......
is the mechanic accepting any responsibility for any of this ? is he being kind with the bill?
worst luck i've ever heard of i 'm always telling folk's VW's are the most reliable vehicle of all......
well let's hope you have had all the bad luck at once and can have a good run now.............

I think he will try to make me pay for the new crank - $3k minimum but there is no way in hell i am.
Im not paying for a new alternator and i refuse to pay for the alternator stand or labour for that fuck up..........

Im ready to tell him where to stick it all...

3k is the cheapest he can get it!!!

Billet stroker crank...
Cheapest one in oz already landed he can pick up is 4k....

The engine cost me 6.5k - long block.
Plus all the extras...
And the thing is second hand - but 'rebuilt'.

Hey Quickbug sorry to hear about all your hassles its a (pia) i know, but i dont think i would trust a mechanic with a $3000 crank id be looking for a pro,do some research take some time, sit back and have a coldie, sounds like you like to go fast and quick, that takes money for the best parts but unless you find the best mechanics to put it together i think more disappointment might follow.Sorry to be a wet blanket and i could be 100% wrong,by the way is that a Berg crank for $3000,all the best anyway.Mick.:beer

Once Your Car is going - OK - I would find another Mechanic... this one sounds like a MUG-CANIC ... and best to stay away from.... There are people who can do things right the first time and there are people who can do things...... again & again... :o:bounce
