Anyone running a supercharged type 1 on the street?


How do supercharged type 1 motors go in street cars?

Can they be reliable?

This topic always arises from timew to time...Go to the shoptalkforums.com and search under the forced induction section, there are heaps of arguments.

I have looked into it in depth...there is a DLI kit from the states which is about $3500 landed. It is not the most advanced type of blower either.

Oval Glen has one that is nearly finished if not already....although because turbo's are more available and easy to fit and cheap, tyhere have not been alot of supercharged bugs done.

I would buy and eaton M45 or M62 off a slk mercedes, you can get them in the states for a couple of hundred on ebay and land them for about $450. They are compact and efficient and should make good power. Run it on top of a 2 litre with some sort of injection and torque would take on a new meaning.

I would still love to do one, although economies of scale say.....thrash the shit out of the wrx motor and if it blows up...go get another for $800 and away we go again. My stroker VW engine was near$10,000, although there is nothing like a set of IDA's behind you.

There is that guy on STF called moggy who runs a EFI intercooled supercharged Type 4 from the UK.

talk to greedy, he supercharged the fatso kombi, and intended to supercharge his beetle hot rod, which i now own.
he ran fatso supercharged for 5 years.

I think a supercharger would be better in a buggy than a turbo because you have a lot more low down power. If a supercharged motor can last 5 years I would be happy.

ive heard an MR2 supercharger can work quite well. i was talking to a freind whos been building buggys since the 70s and has a forumla vee and couple of manxs and a eureka. he was saying if he was going to do it thats what hed use. might be worth researching.

Thanks. That could be worth looking into. It makes sense as a MR2 engine is of similar size and a (used) supercharger from one of those could be fairly cheap from a importer.

over here in WA for a supercharger off of the 4agze, they are still asking about 500 bucks for a used one. not TOO much. but like mentioned. if u can get an eaton off a merc for less. why not get one of those?

but then again, perth prices are bullshit

Can you buy a kit to mount the blower on the manifold or would it have to be custom made?

What compression do they run? I would like to be able to run it on premium.

toyota supercharger with sidedraft dellorto on a dead standard twin port 1600 from memory. Can't remember who built it but he was on the forum and said it went really well, it's a positive displacement supercharger, so it upped his power to that of a 2.2l, or at least that is what he worked out.

BTW, that model supercharger is $350 from various import wreckers. ;)

$350 sounds pretty good to me, would probably be about $1000 in the car?? Once I've bought another carby other various bits and pieces. That's interesting that it works on a standard engine. My engine is a mild 1641 tp, so is very similar.

I think that's pretty good value if you are talking bang for your buck. If I end up up going ahead with it I will post the pics on here.

Castlemaine rod shop do a kit for the blower from a 4agze to go onto the engine in my bay window complete for about $1800.
maybe they could do one similar for a type 1 engine.

If your are gonna do it make sure you use the real deal forged pistons! Make a proper plenum/manifold and for god sake get it tuned properly!

Should be able to do it for less than a $1000! All you need are some brackets and pullies, weld up the brackets, get an SU of a datto or something and pay a machine shop cash to mod some pullies.

I reckon as long as you only ran about 5pds and you had an oil temp guage, it should be ok. Factory compression is really low, and lots of people use Judsons so why should the toyota be any different. The ideal setup is always gonna be forged pistonies, efi and an intercooler,

but, I can't believe I am saying this, :o

There are lots of cars that worked well with draw through set-ups and water injection, providing the boost is not too high. I mean, there are very few factory turbo cars that have forged pistons and the Celica GT4 rallye group A had water injection standard as well as it's factory intercooler.

Matt do you know the guy who built up Fatso? Be worth talking to him.

I used a toyota supercharger from a igg 2ltr 6 on a vg20 nissan v6 running all the time on a water cooled motor inlet temps were 90degrees @ idle use a intercooler or set fuel ratio and use the clutch via a pressure switch and a bypass valve when theres no boost easier to set up on a efi motor.

Moggy is the legend when it comes to supercharging. I have emailed him regarding the set up and he does alot of fabricating himself which for us would cost a bit. I think we are mostly a bit more budget orientated. regardless he was happy to assist any one with questions....I got his address of the shoptalkforums, where there are pages of him argueing the S/C is better than turbo's.

Anyway....the only problem with some of the imported blowers is they do not like petrol running through them in a draw through set up, so either get the carb sealed and different floats etc or go injection.

Here is Mogg's Car!!!! type 4 2.4 litre twin throttle body injection with an m62 off a 2.3 slk.

...I've seen superchargers from MR2's go for around the $250 mark - much easier to set up with EFI.....I have EFI, just have to finish the rest of the car before we go down this road....

I also have a lot to do to my car before I can supercharge it. It doesn't hurt to find out what's involved first though.

I guess it will be about a year before I'm ready to do it, but if I see the right parts going cheap in the meantime I'll pick them up...that's for sure.
