help computer techies

About 6 months ago I had to download new java kit from sun for uni (jdk1.4.sumthin) and attempted to remove 1.3 and 1.1. Bad thing to do. from then on Iexplore had no java. couldnt right click open in new window. no chat rooms etc. But it wasnt too bad cos I had netscape 4.7 and somehow it did work. Albeit a little unreliable. Sometimes pages wouldnt fully load. I then downloaded netscape 7 and it is pretty cool only it wont open chat rooms. You get a window saying click here to download plug in, which I do, but then when its tries to instal it pops up with invalid RPC stub. Why is it tormenting me like this. Ive tried it a few times. I know what RPC's are but why am I getting this error? Bad programing by netscape?

IE says download java VM from microsoft update but it doesnt exist there cos I think they had a bit of a tiff with sun. (you get caught in an endless loop between microsoft update and microsoft downloads.

This morning I manually removed all the java kits thinking that things couldnt get any worse. removed all browsers except IE6 cos it appears impossible.

Everything reboots fine. downloaded new netscape 7 including java bits, but it still tells me I need to download a plug in. Looking at the filename it appears to be the same one it downloaded with N7.

Help me fix this thing so I can go in the chat room.

This error is caused by a bad version of the file "oleaut32.dll", which usually resides in the system folder. To correct the problem, we will remove the old file and then install the file again.

Hi 555bug,

I've just been chatting to Amazer... no luck with your fix.
He's not writing for himself cos now he can't get to AussieVeeDubbers either.

amazer39: downloaded the fix... restarted.. still no go. Stuck in either the MS loop or netscape RPC dead end.

Any more suggestions please?

JAy

Hey update... it worked!! :) Much better now, thanks mate!

JVM

I have 3 versions of JVM running at once cause I keep on changinf course codes .... damn JDK.. Anyway I have had the same problme and used the fix given bt Steve already with success. Only thing I can suggest is unistalling all JDK components rather than juste deletinging them from folders. Check and see if it is till listed as a programme.

I think my problem was expecting it to work as soon as I downloaded that fix. It didnt. But after I downloaded the plugin again (must be about 5 times now) it installed and works fine now. Thanks to all who offered suggestions.

My next problem is quite bizarre. Every now and then my ISP is unable to locate the aussieveedubbers domain. I thought it was problems with the forum cos once before dave becker had the same problem at the same time. But then yesterday Jay was able to get in and I couldnt. Any other website I try is fine, just this place seems to disappear.

I'd suggest you either change your dns settings to automatic or to whatever jay is running. Here is how:

Open Dial-Up Networking

In the Dial-Up Networking window, right-click on your connection. A drop-down menu will appear; select Properties.

Go to the second tab, labelled "Server Types."

At the bottom of the Server Types tab, click on the button labelled "TCP/IP Properties..." A TCP/IP Properties window will appear.

In the TCP/IP Properties window, locate this setting:

"Server assigned name server addresses"
Change this setting to:

"Specify name server addresses"

Enter the settings specified by your isp or ones from jay or whatever

Click OK to exit the TCP/IP Properties window. Click OK again to exit the connection properties.

Restart your computer and reconnect to the Internet.

this should see you right :)

ok. so what are your numbers? tried the default or server assigned (whatever it was) and that doesnt work either.

next thing.
Has anyone got a file NTLDR... dont know the extension. whats it for? What directory is it in? Send me a copy? I deleted mine cos it only had stuff from Rational Rose CASE crap in it. Now my startup stalls until I press a key to continue. Annoying if you are like me and walk away while the puter starts up. From what I can see, I think its being called by cvt1.exe som FAT32 crap.

I'm doing really well here. Usually I format C: after each uni session. gone 2 sessions now without a format. (I would have done it only I got too many docs and MP3's to back up now)

Go to Start > Run
Type "sfc" (without quotation marks) click OK. You will need your OS disk handy.

"sfc" stands for system file checker

Thats a bit odd ntldr is one of the startup files for NT4 / W2000, but your running Win98 - have you had something like a dual boot system ?

nup. years ago I had linux dual boot but been through a few formats since then.

What is the extension for NTLDR and where is it, and I'll just whack an empty one in.

Can somebody puleeeze do me a favour and search their hard drive for a file named NTLDR and tell me the extension.

linux is free so it cant be all that bad! I never managed to get it to crash once so its pretty stable. No blue screens of death! Its not as easy to get around as windows, but then I cant even use Macs. I'm a slave to Microsoft im afraid. (when at home without UNIX)

NTLDR does not have an extention.

It is a startup file for NT4 / 2000 and XP if you mail me I'll send you a copy of the one on my hard drive - but it may not help.

haver you aborted an install of XP at some stage (Or somone else ?)

The easiest fix is to meake a windows 98 startup disk from YOUR pc (Has to be right version of 98) boot from it and at the A:> prompt type "sys c:\" this will recopy the correct system files to the C drive and should stop the annoying messages

Some links to help

http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?Catalog=LCID%3D1033%26CDID%3...

{You'll need to copy and paste the above link to get it to work}

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;255220

BTW I usually get at least 1 call a month with this error and it is most most common in machines with a floppy left in the floppy drive........but I wont insult you by asking you to check that
:D

in response to ovalGlenn yes Linux is good for what its designed for, its fast stable and totally customisable. That said however I'd still recommend M$ as it really is a much better package for the average user even if it is a fat pig. If you want to try out a distro I'd recomend the latest redhat 8.x I'm running 7.3 but the later the better..this distro is probably the least unix like, therefore its probably the best for a windows user. Guess this could start a fight this kind of talk :)

I have never tried to instal anything other than 98. The file WAS on my drive though. Is it possible that the install for Rational Rose made it after it couldnt find it? All it contained was references to RR which is why I deleted it. There is some reference to it in the setup file on my WIN98 CD though.

the second link is the problem I had. .. HAD... I dont have it anymore, thanks. I searched high n low for my start up disk. When I found it, I couldnt get it in my drive. I was cursing my wife and/or daughter for leaving a disk in there but then when I looked at its contents (the setup files for IE6 and N7) i found it was mine. So why didnt I get the non system disk error? Next time insult me by asking if there's a floppy in the drive.

Thankyou. Will see how I go next time I boot up. Thankyou again.

PS dont tell anyone.

Amazer I did a search @ http://www.google.com  for you. These links may help solve your problem.

http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/N/NTLDR.html

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htm

The above links both say to do this

To correct the problem, the user must boot the computer with a Windows 95 or 98 Startup diskette or another bootable diskette with sys.com on it. Then, at the "A:\>" prompt, type "sys c:" and press "enter." A "System Transferred" prompt should appear and then the user must reboot the computer without the diskette.

Hope this helps

Michael
