Thanks Laurie, I have sent u2u. Yes the Triple cab is still two tone green and I hope to change the colour scheme but not now. My priority is to rego it and use it and do the cosmetics as i go. Getting a new battery tomorrow to try and fire her up.

I will post pics as she is now and progress pics. I guess with a custom Splitty there are no huge boundaries re the look I finish with. It has Disc front end and is lowered. I just need to replace bay dash with splitty...anyone got one?

I like the present wheels..actually i like the colour scheme as well. Will be putting a polished alum custom bull bar and have fun with interior.

This is fun eh!!! Must buy a good nail brush for the old oil and grease under the fingernail fix...

The chassis number is to the left of the motor and after a bit of elbow grease I could read it.

The chassis no is VWK 7157

Can anyone tell the year of manufacture from this and what it was built as. I think the Triple Cab was originally a 15 window!!!!

UPDATE on TRIPLE CAB HISTORY

Well I have had a busy afternoon and it looked like it was going to be real unproductive until I got a lead from a forum member to try someone who may know the builder.

Well the Triple cab creator, Ray Southwell, has moved on and no longer operates 'The Bug Factory' but the lead turned up the guy who bought it off Ray. His name is Mark Jenkins and this is what he told me:-

He bought the Triple Cab about 8 years ago from Ray Southwell who built the Triple from a Microbus he had at the time. It was originally painted Burgundy over Silver/Grey.

Mark bought it as a promotional vehicle for his decorating business and had it painted the 'colours' of his business which was dark green over light green.....it still has the same paintwork. The paint job cost Mark almost as much as the triple itself!!!

WhenMArk bought it it had a 2380cc fully worked motor and he rsaid it could easily do 100 mph!!! Finally the case cracked as it was pretty well bored out...(go figure). It had an auto gearboxas well. Mark put a T3 motor and a fresh auto and one of his employees used it for a long work related trip and blew the box.....he had driven it hundreds of K's in 2nd gear as he had not selected 'D'!!! (moron)

Mark repaired it and gave/sold it to his brother-in law- who was an accountant. When the speedo cable broke it was thought to be useless by his bro in law and so he left it parked for ages on the verge and vandals broke the front and side windows.

I presume from there David from Albury bought it and later sold it to Robert (POST MODERN) from Wooloona Heights nr Bulli where i bought it from !!

Well that's the full story. I EVEN GOT THE REGO NUMBER FROM MARK.....IT WAS 'MAD 132'. Mark is hopefully digging up some pics for me and is writing me a letter to state he owned it and what the rego was.

I would like to catch up with Ray Southwell one day but am pleased to have filled the gaps about this unique custom veedub......Long may it live.

I'm going to try and fire up the motor tomorrow.....will post as to what happened.

BTW Is Ray Southwell on this list? Sounds an 'interesting' character and of course he would have the info on the Triple.

Am looking for a suitable name for this Triple cab...any ideas

I like both the names I guess after we had a few more suggestions I could run a poll with the winner getting a ride.

As I write this I have the battery on charge and will put it on shortly and try to fire it up...If you hear a noise it is probably the Triple blowing up. I will get rid of old fuel first.

The pics in this link from last year is exactly as I have received the Triple Cab last weekend. Robert, aka PostModern was not able to start on the Triple apart from cleaning up the glass. It was a real sad tale that he told and is a really nice guy who seems to love vee dubs but unfortunately bought a project rather than an ongoing concern.

http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=6778

I would like to keep the colour scheme as I think it keeps in touch with it's history and is unusual. However if i did paint it it would be silver as I think it would look great in that coulor too.
I am gonna to try and start it today. Will keep everyone posted.

we put that motor and box in it in albury and drove it ,should be ok for a while funny to drive with that little wheel on a split i copped some grief off that guy abut that bus , i don't think he had held a spanner or welder in his hand and wanted to restore a rusty split

G'day David...Thought you were overseas mate or I would have contacted you straight away.

Thanks for the info re motor and gearbox.....I will return it to splitty dash and bigger wheel as it must be a bit of a handful with such a smell sports wheel.

Anyone know muich about ignition wiring and what goes where. I can do mechanics , welding etc but HATE ELECTRICS WITH A PASSION. I have a mutimeter but it speaks a language I dont know. Oh Well here comes the old circuit tester!!

Will be in touch and hopefully reuinte you with the Triple.

BTW how long did you own it before moving it on and what motor and gearbox was in it when you bought it?

Thanks....and I thought it was good of you not to get into the 'conflict' that surrounded this Triple cab at the time

Thought I'd pipe up and let you know that I know Ray Southwell. I haven't seen him for a number of years however.

Ray indeed did run the "Bug Factory" at Erina. He bought it off Greg Curtis in the late 80's. Ray also did have a burgundy / silver split - so the story rings true thus far. The burgundy / silver split as I remember it made it to Nambucca a couple of times - I certainly remember once as I was following it all the way - little did I know it was dropping oil - all over the front of my Ghia.

I moved away from the Central Coast in 92, and am now back up here. Ray used to live in Budgewoi, and I believe that he still may - however I don't think he's doing VW stuff anymore.

That's all I know. I can ask another mate who may know where he is.

Thanks squiz. I would appreciate a contact number as his story will fill in all the blanks....

Well David, I did not realise you had it that long..have been flat out with a sick Arabian Horse so no time for the Triple this past few days...the horse is better and I am back into it today. The ignitio wires are all hanging down loose and from what i have already tried I can get the motor to churn over...very slow grind...but that may be battery that was on it that I charged.

Have bought new battery...can do V* holden motor so will be good for a few chegs eh!!

Re the wires as David said there is a starter button but it has only one wire on it .a very thick red wire.

The wiring is as follows:

Thick red one on one of two terminals on starter button
Thickish red with black stripe with connector on end but hanging loose
Medium thick red one with connector
Thin green one with connector

There are only two connectors on the back of the 'starter' button.
I played with mix of wiring by touching a couple of wires at a time and got the motor to turn over..in a grindy slow fashion...there is oil in it!!

Only one red light comes on in the speedo and it is the battery symbol light, I thought the oil symbol light ought to come on as well...is that right?
Will it start if the oil symbol light does not come on??

I will start anohter post in the 'technical help' forum as I need to get help on this

Thanks guys...and robno for posting the pics

thanks mate

There's an R Southwell at Budgewoi and one at Gateshead [Newcastle] on the whitepages. I reckon I know which one I'd call. ;)
