Type IV Cooling?
Gday people
Just a quick one. Im looking at doing a type iv motor for by baja, and i want your opinions on the cooling of them. I would like to use a type IV
motor but turn it into the upright style motor. I have seen sharpbuilt kits.
What i need to know is do those kits supply the cooling the motor requires. Or should the stock cooling be left on the motor?

If you keep the stock cooling then you are going to have a long motor with lots of overhang.
I know nothing about the doghouse-type upright kits, but I've heard they are adequate if the larger fan is used.
The Porsche fans are reputed to pump plenty of air and would be no worries. These also come in different models from 5 to 11 blades I think. (Or is it
13?)

The 1600 doghouse cooling shroud and fan are quite sufficient to cool a 2 litre type4 engine.
The type 4 has a bigger oil cooler so makes better use of the air flowing through there (it requires modification to the dgohouse cooler tinware to
fit the larger cooler).
And the type4 engine has about 30% more fin area for the heads (compared to the type1/3 engine), so it makes better use of the cooling air there
too.
Joe Cali http://home.att.net/~nextgen/index.html wrote a very good
manual on the conversion of Type4 engines to upright cooling.
And yes - Sharpbuilt in QLD make kits for either the doghouse cooling shroud or the Porsche shroud if you don't want to do it yourself (they get
a mention in Joe's manual).
