This is obviously not a factory manual diagram, but it shouldn’t differ much. I think ADR’s require the auxiliary lights to be independently controlled so wire them to a separate switch rather than the headlights.

I think leagally in QLD fog/driving lights should be wired so they only come on when your park lights/head lights are on, still controlled by separate switch.
Similarly spot lights only come on with high beam.
Both rules are for good reason if you ask me!

No!!!
I just looked at link above, it is correct anyway.

Get a relay from super cheap (few bucks) and some crimp connectors and cable (20amp stuff). Run power from appropriate fuse to relay and on to lights (switch part of relay, most have a diagram on them).
The take power from parker circuit (even a dash light bulb) , run it through your switch and to activating connector on relay and your done!

just a quick note for those interested....

In Queensland fog lights can only be operated when the parking lights are on. They are not supposed to be on when all the lights are off, or when the headlights are on (high or low beam). Thankfully VW were aware of this when they designed the cars electrical system so they should be easy to connect. Firstly make sure that your headlight switch has a terminal numbered '57' - not all headlight switches have this terminal. This terminal is only 'live' (ie: has power to it) when the switch is in the parking light position (I believe that the type 3's have a green warning light on the dash to indicate that the parking lights are on. This warning light is connected to terminal 57) Then run a wire from this terminal via another switch (so you can switch the fog light independantly from the parking lights) then to a relay which in turn will switch the fog light on.... Do not run the fog light directly off the headlight switch - it will draw too much current and cause it to burn out, always use a relay.

...confused yet?

Let me know if you need a diagram - I can draw one fairly quickly.

This is the way that the fog light on my '63 bug is wired and it works fine (and is legal too :D).
