before making comments 56astro maybe you should do your homework on the subject . THE GENE BERG TROPHY is a category for the FASTEST STREET REGERISTED VW . The car must be RTA REGERISTED with the ENGINE & CHASSIS NUMBERS MATCHING THE REGO PAPERWORK . The COOLING SYSTEM must be intact . The engine must run on PUMP PETROL ONLY . Only STREET TYRES to be used . The BODY & DOORS MUST BE STEEL . GLASS must be fitted , no perspex . SPARE WHEEL must be fitted . The car must be able to be DRIVEN @ 110KPH FOR 15 MINS .

I have highlighted the areas where the oval will comply , just incase you get confussed !!:D

Wayne,

I don't doubt the fact that you could turn up to a race meeting and bluff the organisers into thinking that it is (properly) "street registered". Hell, you'd have the papers to prove it.

The problem is, as you stated in one of your previous posts, that somebody is going to "sign off" that the engine is a 1.7 kombi engine, which you have turboed. Technically you could take it out to 1.950.

But 2900, OMG!

There is a big risk going to be taken by someone, either you (for providing false info to your engineer) or your engineer (for approving something he knew was false).

If your vehicle is involved in a fatal accident (heaven forbid, and not necessarily the car at fault) and the car gets a going over as part of the coronial enquiry, and it is discovered that the engine is not a 1.7L kombi engine but instead a 2.9L beast of a thing, who will they come looking for to sue the ar5e off? Will it be determined that the vehicle should never have been registered in the 1st place? OFF COURSE!

And that was the point to my original post. The intent of the Gene Berg trophy is to reward the quickest street car over the 1/4 mile. If you have to cheat the system to do it, then .....

There is no doubt though, that it's going to be an awesome street car! ;)

I agree with Astro. Sure people do it all the time... but talking about it on a public forum? That's nuts! Especially for a business.

As for the work, thought and effort; I have only admiration.

Matt,
although you seem to be an authority on most things, I think you are dreaming. ;)
I also have to agree with others when they talk about hotrods. It really gives me the heebie geebies when I see some bogun with a blown big block in a rod that couldn't weigh more than 800kgs max. Please don't go preaching about so-called illegalities with regard to engine size etc. This is how it really works in NSW. If the engineer signs off on something, no matter how illegal you or I think it is, if they can back it up in any way, then it is legal. I don't like it either, but that's the way things works. All serious mods are done in such a way to find loopholes, otherwise we'd all drive stock commodores. :puke

I say the same thing to rodder mates who have dubiously registered vehicles. it is irresponsible and disrespectful to other road users. Regard to big blocks in rods - read the specific rules relating to Pre '48s. Especially now the National Guidelines are in place and LEGAL for cars on SR plates.

Simple fact. If engine size is different to that on the papers the car is NOT legal. End of story.

Any business who talks about doing such on a public forum is inviting trouble.

Gotta love a future religious leader telling us it's ok to lie and register a car fraudulently.

ah Matt, selectively reading again? If you'd looked closer, you have noticed I said, "I don't like it either".

Besides, if religion is the crock you claim it is, why should you care.

The real truth is this. Almost every car on australian roads is illegal in some way. bull bars, alloy wheels, radios, mobile phones, non standard tyres etc. The law is about the letter. It's all about how you twist the letters round. So where do you wanna draw the line, the blown big block or the non-factory cupholder?

Yes but in the same paragraph you condone it and suggest that it can't be done legally. It can and is when people bother.

Flintstones said it before when he said this. But no I don't condone breaking the law or, for that matter blown big blocks in 800kg rods. Both are just stupidity.

But back to the matter at hand. If Wayne's Engineer says it's ok, it's ok whether we agree or not.

Here's another way of looking at it, Hypo can get another 1.7L engine and turbo it then install in his car and get the sign off, you would then say that this is legit.
After it has all the approval's and is registered he can then build it up into a 2.9L turbo'ed engine. It still has all the approval's and is still registered.
But if he didn't tell you it was a 2.9LT and he showed you the paper work that said it was a 1.7LT what would you say the engine is? I guarantee you would not have said it was a 2.9LT......at the end of the day, an awesome car will be built so lets enjoy:kiss

Back to Project Oval..........Wayne do your self a favour & fit a good sidecover. The side cover strengtheners do help stop the axle tube distorting the tin cover, but dont really help to hold the crownwheel against the pinion. Also get yourself a spool that wont crack the factory carrier, or push out the side gear circlips if the weld fails....both these things I have seen, especially if MIG is used on those hardened gears. Keep up the good work, I love the project!

I was querying a guy who worked at the RTA about vw's ability to increase the engine size by boring and stroking and he basically told me that they base the engine size of what the block is standard . So a 1916cc beetle is still 1600cc according to them . Thats what I was told , ayone gotten other news ?

you hit the nail on the head Bug_racer !! RTA only base the capacity of the engine in the vehicle on the origional capacity identified by the engine number that was stamped from factory . Engineers follow the same set of rules . Matt and his supporters should sit back and relax for a minute and think of these couple of points . 1/ I am supplying every piece of information regarding this project without hiding anything so that the readers can enjoy seeing this car develop . 2/ if I wanted to cheat on the Gene Berg trophy ( as suggested ), then I would have told everyone that it is an 1800 turbo . 3/ take a long hard think of how many 1300 beetles there are running around with 1600 bore kits in them and no brake upgrades , and not approved . also how many 1916 engines and bigger (some with turbo's ) regeristed as 1600's and they enter the Gene Berg Trophy drags. 4/ finally , at least I am doing a project and taking every step / effort to make it safe and legal .

UPDATE trans and engine

stayed back at work tonight and finished the transmission assembly complete with new brakes and all of the solid engine/trans mounts , ready to be fitted to the oval . Then started on the engine , only need to remove the heads and barrels to shim the barrels to decompress the engine to suit PREMIUM UNLEADED PETROL . Every thing else in engine OK .
following are some more pics .

first pic shows the solid transmission mount with the bellhousing brace strap attached .
