FYI, Theres a guy down here running the same size engine with cast iron cylinders NA (IDA's). It is mostly track, does 150mph down the back straight at Puke, 11s at the strip, he has had no issues with the cylinders, its been 4 or 5 years of hard running.

BTW, love the heads......drool....:thumb

I have been using the cast iron cylinders to date and they have not caused me any grief as yet . The first set that I used in 1997 in the 2.5 litre drag beetle ( 105mm ) was a second hand set that had done 4 years on the street prior . I then fitted them to my engine and although it didn't do many miles , they were hard miles @ 7500rpm - 8600rpm . After 2 years in the drag car I then stripped and rebuilt the car into my current sports sedan with the 2.9litre engine . You guessed it , the same barrels & pistons were used and won me the AUSTRALIAN HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE 2LITRE TO 3LITRE SPORTS SEDANS (2000) , also the NSW Hillclimb championship 2litre - 3litre sports sedans (2000 ) and many other wins before being removed in 2001 due to the engine begining to sound like a diesel when it was cold .
All of the time the engine was running without air cleaners due to being raced only . I am very impressed with the 105mm barrels and I and about to test them to the next level , maybe they wont be suitable ? who knows ? I am about to find out the same way that I have achieved all of my current VW knowledge , that is try it myself !!:duh

You could rebuild three times with new irons for the cost of nickies.

Though a full set of nickies (pots and pistons) give heaps better cooling and much longer life.

Yeah, I'm sure they do. The thing I keep thinking is, on what sort of motor, are we talking an understressed street motor or a full race motor, where do you start to see real benefits?

On any engine. The nickies are machined so the fins are thinner with the same surface area per fin but about 1.5 times the number of fins per inch. So the surface area alone gives and incredible amount of cooling.

I haven't yet seen independant data but the surfaces are also reported to have far less friction, and we all are aware of the immediate free moving benefits there.

well if they're so good, maybe there's a machine shop in Oz that could make them up out here. That way they'd be half the price the yanks are charging. Probably be better quality if I know the yank stuff too. What do you reckon?

more progress tonight

stayed back at work again tonight , removed the old transmission from the oval , cleaned and painted the chassis forks and fitted the transmission assembly . The engine has been measured ( chambers CC'd ) and compression ratio worked out to 7.5:1 . One of the barrels has been taken to the engineers shop , where he is manufacturing the 8mm thick cylinder spacers .:jesus

first picture shows the eagle chromemoly conrods that swing on the Bernie Bergmann 82mm full circle stroker crank .

Hey Wayne.
This is going to be one sweet car mate.

Its a shame that people have to bring there negative crap into the thread.

I recieved the same crap when i posted a thread about a certain Fi 2.8ltr type4 powered oval.
All had been properly engineered ,aprroved and registered too.

All i can say is i love your work wayne, And Keep the follow ups comming

WOW. Now thats impressive. I do have to agree its a shame about negativity being bought in... what creates it, jelousy or what? Good luck with everything. Keep as updated every step of the way. For whats its worth i have a 66 beetle running exactly that, a 1300 with a 1600 kit and yep, no brake upgrades, Goes good, and with constant fortnightly adjustment it stops good too.

cheers buddy!

an aluminium housing has been manufactured out of 3mm chequer-plate to cover in the entire section that has been cut away . The engineer visited my shop on thursday and is very happy with the progress and is very satisfied with the additional strength supplied by the new housing .

MORE PROGRESS TODAY

today the bodywork and repairs on the oval body were completed and the body was covered with its final coating of primmer/filler . My father , Allan , has been doing all of the preparation for the body for me and after applying the final guide-coat proceeded in rubbing down the oval so that I can get it to K&D smash repairs tomorrow afternoon . Kevin at K&D will be applying the ' BLOOD ORANGE ' 2-PAK on saturday morning . Tonight I stayed back at work again to do the final fit-up of the fibreglass front and rear bumpers with the custom made aluminium brackets and also the fibreglass running boards . some more pics following .

PAINTED AND READY TO ASSEMBLE

well the oval took a quick trip to K&D smash repairs at Unanderra last friday to have the final coats of paint applied . Kevin painted the oval on saturday morning and I had Dave (a team member) collect it today . pics follow of the oval painted . Keep up to date over the next 2 weeks as the oval will be rapidly assembled and documented for your viewing pleasure . Linclon at Teds muffler service is expecting the oval at his shop later this week to start the manufacture of the turbo plumbing and Kevin from South coast rotary is expecting the oval onto his dyno in just 2 weeks time .

Engine assembly & set-up

I ran into a minor problem today after fitting the barrel shims that had been manufactured to decompress the engine . The origional barrel shims being used in this engine were 5mm thick , the new shims are now 8mm thick . This extra 3mm meant that when I fitted the cylinder head , the headstud did not come all the way through the nuts . So I tried to screw the studs from the engine case to compensate but due to the type-4 headstuds being 12mm diameter into the engine case , this just lifted the barrels from their seats . I really didn't want to change headstuds as I have had a top quality chromemoly set manufactured previously and they have worked very well . So the decision was made to machine the cylinder head bosses where the head washers sit onto the heads . There is ample thickness in this area and some pics following of the most recent head mods being performed .

the type-4 barrels do have a much longer spigot at the bottom of the barrel than the type-1 barrels . The pistons are hanging out a fair bit , but I think that they will stay in there . The oil ring comes level with the top of the spigot and there is approximately 35mm of spigot .
