Hydraulic Lifters in a 2L type 4

So has anyone converted from manual lifters to hydraulic lifters on an aircooled type 4?

I know that the later ones came out with hydraulics, but has anyone done the conversion?

Have a scroll through this thread for starters....titled "swapping hydraulic lifters for solid"...so should be what you are after.

Oh and this one:

...and a little of this one:

the search function will yield a lot of great info on most forums ;)

Cheers

Thanks Alan, I'd already done that search, but it seems the americans are swapping hydraulic for solids not the other way around....they obviously dont like them. But I've recently pulled down a T3 aircooled engine that has them, and it has got over 300,000klms on it with no damage to the cam....the only reason the motor was stripped down was the customer has had the van 20 years and wants it to last him another 20 years.....
I like the idea of quieter running and not having to adjust the tappets again.
Some interesting info that I've found is that the solid lifters use an aluminium pushrod 270mm long while the hydraulics use a steel pushrod 260mm long.

Well it works in the short term....I fitted them up today with the modified push rods and its nice and quiet....no noticeable difference in performance, but its definately not worse.....we'll see if its all doom & gloom in the future as the americans seem to think...

Good stuff Graham, hope it all works out well for ya! Would be nice to not have to adjust tappets I agree.

I suspect the Americans swapping from hydraulic to solid are doing so as part of building performance engines b/c (IIRC) there are a lot more cam options for solid lifters. There are also a lot of Americans with stock and mild engines who seem to be very happy with their hydraulics.

Graham, Try John Alder as I had hydraulic ones in my twin cab, apart from the occassional rattle on start up, I never had any problems with them
