earlier engines had the oil cooler inside the fan housing which actually restricted the air flow to some cylinders.

The doghouse has the cooler external to the fan housing(attached to the back) but shrouded and allows full flow to all cylinders.

So it all comes down to oil cooling

You also require the correct fan. The "doghouse" fan is slightly deeper to give you the extra air for the oil cooler:P

If you have a doghouse you would most likely have a dog. The advantage of a doghouse is your dog has somewhere to sleep when it is raining, unless it is allowed inside:jesus Sorry could not resist:duh:kiss

Yes, Anthony,
the 1971 Supers had the Doghouse oil cooler....
with a wider fan to supply the extra air for the
external oil cooler....

Anyone with a Non Doghouse oil cooler, especially if You have a 1500 or 1600 engine, should think about the change
to a Doghouse oil cooler...
Even the Oil Cooler is a better design than the early types...

One of the most common problems with NON-Doghouse oil cooler engines was No 3 Cylinder which was always hotter than the other 3, because the cool air went thru the oil cooler first then onto no 3 cylinder....
Not a very good design that..... I know it was an old design!
But VW should have addressed the problem long before the 1971 model beetle....
IMHO

To Find out If You have a doghouse oil cooler, just put Your hand behind the fan housing on the Left Hand side... If its all nice & flat... No Doghouse... the doghouse sticks out about 3 inches and then there is a squarish chute where the air goes out - towards the gearbox... Best to See One first...

What is wrong with the solex and manifold that was on it?

Mick H, you do not need a dog to have a dog house.... arn't most of our garages the dog house.....I'm in trouble for spending too much time in there and the ironic part is that I get to go back there till she cools off..
