Without looking up actual details in a book, these beauties were the first pre-production run that Mr Porsche had built as the "peoples car" for Mr Hitler (~mid 30's). The one that the German public paid for by collecting tokens like frequent flyer points, to be exchanged for a new car when you had enough. The German SS were sent out in them driving them everywhere for very extensive testing to find any weakness's, which were quickly corrected.
WWII broke out not long after, so none were ever delivered on tokens and they became the base for the Kubel instead.

yeah, Andy, your thinking of slightly later one. the token ones had full bonnet (i think) and other minor sheet metal mods. funny how all those companies worked so closely.

Here are the VW30 Beetle prototypes made in 1937...
there were 30 made...
the V3 was very similar..... almost identical.....

I'll post pics of both together... to see the differences....

V3 & VW30 Beetle prototypes Pics*****

Here are the V3 & V30 side by side...

Differences are very minor......

the missing rear window, suicide doors & small front opening hood remained....

These V30s were tested by the elite SS troops over 8 months and totalled approx 800,000 miles....
This level of extreme & rigorous testing was unheard of at that time....

VW30s lined up in tank barracks****

pic of VW30 s lined up at the tank barracks where they were housed while the 800,000 miles of testing
was completed.

Porsche worked in the Panzer tank factory,
designing tanks during the 2nd world war....

The Tiger Mk2 Tank was the Best tank in WW2....
I have only found out recently there was a tiger mk2 -
It was much more heavily armoured and better
designed [much better looking also] than the
original tiger tank, which was also superior to
all of the allies tanks...

whether Porsche actually designed those I don't know....

Why do car companies crush good cars?****

Imagine how much they would be worth now......

Hand made beetles..... WOW!!

Its weird how car companies do that....

Leyland did that in the 70s with the Force 7, a two door P76
as the P76 wasn't selling, due to parts supply problems,
and they had made these force 7 , 2 door hardtop cars, which may have ending
up winning Bathurst with their all alloy V8 engine...
Anyway the company went bust...
and all the Force 7s were crushed, all except 1 or 2.....
Now if You were going broke, wouldn't You sell everything You could????
Leyland Australia was owned by British Leyland who made Land Rovers etc...

Lee

Incorrect VW books****

I have many VW Books Andy and many are filled with incorrect information....

It seems the biggest problem with VW books and the model
years.... ie
1968 Beetles were made from 1st August 1967 till 31st July
1968... etc... same from 1955 >

Many people are using the Made dates as the model dates
ie.. 1968 Beetle made in late 1967 is "Now" a 1967 Beetle ??

I have now found that many of the "big Name" VW book
authors aren't really into air cooled VWs at all...
They may own one, and drive a new VW or Audi...
but thats about it.....

they also write about other cars too....
they just write magazine articles and Books for a living..

they probably like Morris Minors too.... [in the UK]
or Nash Ramblers etc [ in the US.....]

I did stop buying VW books as some I bought from ebay
were just books with pics of VWs in them....
One doesn't even have any original VWs in it.... like the
person who took the pics, never went to a UK VW car show..
as there are plenty of Non modified VWs at those....
I then came across two VW books that are well worth buying.

One is by Ryan Lee Price who was a VW trends editor,
and is now doing something else... the book- the VW Beetle-
is excellent with the history of the Volkswagens at the start
and then - year by year model changes from 1945- 1967
excellent information including the chassis numbers when
the changes were made ,I have just found that they are NOT
model years but calendar years... as the widened number
plate lamp housing introduced on the 1964 Beetle,
actually was introduced on Oct 31st 1963 which makes it a
1964 model beetle... Correct....

The other Book - guide to purchase & DIY restoration - VW
Beetle & transporter by Lindsay Porter... is excellent also,
showing how to pull apart & put together many parts of a
Beetle & Kombi.. the Rust problem in the UK is Just terrible
where the chemicals placed on the ICY roads during the
winter just eats any bare metal.... they also have the same
problem in North America and Europe......
We are lucky We only put salt on our fries & not on the roads. :):)
