pushrod tube leak No More....


Well i believe i have found all gears but just as i was about to go for a test drive i noticed smoke coming from engine and discovered one of the push rod tubes is leaking. It looks like the seal is stuffed so does that mean i have to remove the heads or just the tappets and the rod itself then remove the tube replace the deal and put it all back together.
Any advice would be great and tell me again why kombis are so great.

My experience is with mid 70's busses so if its an early motor this may not relate!?

Depending on age of tube rubber you might be able to get away with manouvering the leaky tube. Unless the rubber is shagged it may have pinched and a little bit of careful prodding and poking might just force it to pop back in place! There is some movement so give it a go before going down the backing off the heads path!

Youll remember why there so bloody good when you get the bastard going

If its stuffed, you can remove the pushrod, cut the tube and replace it with an ajustable push rod without removing the head.Most VW shops should have some laying around or know where to get them..

Nah man! Type 4's only need the rocker gear removed, pull the push rod then pull the tubes. Heads DON'T need to come off.
There is an o'ring on each end of the tubes. Make sure the seat of the o'ring on the tubes is clean and no dint's. Also make sure the holes in the case and head the o'rings sit on are clean and no scratches.
Next MAKE SURE you get a good o'ring set. The good ones will have a Viton seal that sit's in the head (the larger one). They are often a different colour, green, orange etc. These handle the heat of the head better and will last longer. Use some grease when you put them back in so you don't damage the o'ring.
One last point, have a carefull look how the steel spring wire sits and holds the push rod tubes in place so you get it back right on re-assembly. Better still, only do one head at a time so you can look at the other one as a reference.

Is it a type 4 motor or a type 1 motor???

Yes went down to custom offroad this afternoon got some new seals and will attempt it on Saturday. Sounds fairly easy and was also warned to hold the tappet assembly as it is spring loaded and will fly evrywhere if not held together

Well i hav pulled it out and replaced the seals and she went back in and amazingly enough no leak. damn site easier than doing a beelte one.
