Oil cooler leak on 1500 type 1
My new buggy had a big leak from under the doghouse. I took the motor out and replaced the cracked cooler and the two rubber o rings and put it all
back together, but the leak is now 10 times worse. Is there any tricks or something else I need to check in there?

Oil Cooler seals & relief Valve ********
Hi,
there are 3 different oil cooler seals.... that I know of..
You used the correct ones...
probably the smallest..... they fitted in the recesses OK..
Did You use any gasket cement on the seals?
I always use Aviation jointing goo [or permatex] on the seals
so if the seal cracks, the cement still seals...
same as on push rod tube seals....
You may have squashed the seals..... I used nyloc locking nuts so they cannot come loose, but they don't have to be done up too tight... OR
The other thing that could be wrong... the oil pressure relief valve could be stuck...
which would result in abnormally high oil pressures....
enough to make an oil cooler leak....
under the rear of the engine, on the left hand side of the crankshaft pulley is a large slotted screw....
this is where the oil relief valve hides.....
Just unscrew it with a very large screwdriver....
Normally the relief valve drops out..... with spring...
clean it up... it should be free to move up & down...
if its stuck.... this is probably the cause....

There is a BIG chance that the engine block is cracked around the oil cooler, if it is you can try and sleeve the gallery that feeds the oil cooler,
if not it means a new case.

hmm bugger.
The seals are the round square sided ones not the later stepped type, and I'm reasonably certain they are right. It's not a dribble as you would
expect with lack of sealing compound, it's a literal flood of oil. No harm in checking the releif valve so I'll do that thanks.
I'll check for cracks, thanks 11CAB.
The superbug motor used loose washers under the oil cooler, but there was none on either of the 1500's that I have, should there be?

hopefully that is NOT the case.....
Are You sure it was the oil cooler?
as I have an oil pressure sender unit mounted on My doghouse oil cooler, and when it leaked, I naturally thought it was the oil cooler seals....

definately the cooler, the tab with the one hole on the top of the case was broken clean off.

just whipped the motor out again, it looks like they are the wrong seals! the old seals are maybe a mm taller, and have a bulge almost in the middle
of the side, though I'm not sure if that's from being compressed or not.

if you take the engine lid off you can get to the doghouse and remove it
and attend to the leaks
saves crawling under unless you have a hoist
which i aint got lol

there is no engine lid. it's a buggy not a kombi unfortunately. found out what it was anyway, it was yet another type of seal (black one)
