wheel bearings

Is it possible to 'overpack' them with grease? I probably had about 5-10mm of grease past the bearing races... Could it be possible that it could get past the seal and contaminate the brake linings?

I thought the entire hub was supposed to be filled with grease??
As for grease getting to the brakes, thats what the seals there for.

I always fill up the gap between the inner & outer bearings with grease.... I don't usually fill the dust cap up with grease

If You used Lithium based Moly grease....
it will probably last 20+ years....
Castrol Moly lithium grease is available everywhere including BIG W...
So, its easy to find... Don't forget to jack to jack the front of the car up
and grease the front torsion bars while You are at it...
Just pump ssome grease into the 4 gease nipples until it starts to
come out the ends of the torsion bar seals...
This should be done at every oil change - and the torsion bar bearings or bushes will last forever...
Don't forget the ball joints or King Pin/Link Pins grease nipples too...
All these need regular maintainence.... and they will go forever....

Lee -- using - Lithium based Moly grease since 1962....

Forgot Your question..... Sorry,,,

No You cannot really overgrease them....
the grease will just come out of the grease seal or out of the dust cap....

Lithium based Moly grease turns oily when heated, so it would just leak out rather easily....
Not sure about soap based chassis grease.....

Thats why you use Hi-temp wheel bearing grease. Also available at any supermarket.

Moly grease is primarily desinged for sliding bushes and the like and is not designed to be used in roller or ball bearings as the properties of the moly grease can promote "skidding" of the balls/rollers leading to increased wear and in worst cases, bearing failure.
Plus it does not have the Hi-temp properties to prevent melting at elevated temps that front wheel bearings are subjected to.

Having said all that, plenty of guys use it with no ill effects!

Thanx for the comments guys. I did use Hi-Temp Bearing grease (Castrol btw, Lee :)) There would've been about 10-15mm of space around the stub axel when I inserted the drum back on, so that sounds like there should be lots of room for expansion or moving around when the grease gets warm enough.. The seals were all new and the seal race was smooth and rust free etc when I install them last.. (pretty dam sure they were anyway). But I'll try take some of the grease out and have a look in 3000 miles or so to see if there is any leakage or anything...

I think your bearings would fail if u used normal moly grease! DON'T DO IT!
