Whats with Beetle accelerator setups?
For over a year now My Herbie has sported a rotary engine,
it should go real well, but it wont get full throttle.
I have lost count of the days spent trying to sort this out.
I am sure that the 1200 I took out cant have been getting full throtle either hence it may well have been even more painfully slow than standard
before I took it out, although it seemed to get along as well as I expected.
Now I have measured the travel that the cable does at the carby end and it is only 18 mm.
That seems ridiculous to me,
I have tried ...
the original beetle cable receiver, with the thought that that should be fine as we are still only turning a butterfly valve in a cylinder with in the
carby and so the angle and distance would still be much the same.
I have tried ...
reducing the radius on the linkage for the carby down to 18 mm from the centre of the shaft to the centre attachment for the cable.
I have tried ...
securing the accelerator arm on the floor of the car, so it cant flex too much and waste the travel of the pedal.
I have tried ...
welding another tab onto the back of the pedal where the linkage attaches, so there is an enlaged radius between the pivot of the pedal and the
linkage so it can push more distance on the arm.
I have tried ...
removing the stopper from behind the pedal as so as to not hinder any travel.
I have tried ...
Sceaming loud profanitys at it, as thats quite popular.
Surely it cant be that hard,
I have everything on the car myself and like to think of myself as well able.
But I am being beaten by a half throttle setup.
there is 130 hp just waiting to be unleashed on an unsuspecting gearbox, but so far I wouldn't put money on it against a 1600 twinport that get full
acceleration.
The Beetle is a 62 model
Does anyone know how far the cable should travel if it were all working as designed?
I believe it a common problem, is there a common solution?
Please help before I stop bothering with it all together.

No idea what the standard travel should be, but I agree with you that the accelerator setups can be frustrating.
Have you checked to see if the accelerator cable tube that runs down the tunnel is still attached to the tunnel ? if this is flexing you will lose
travel.
Secondly, does the cable have a guide between the frame horns and the firewall / engine ? stock bugs have a cable tube that guides the cable here. If
you dont have one, the accel cable can get stuck on things like gearbox bolts (I now have a 6mm deep gouge in the gearbox casing from this, it acts
like a saw).
Worst comes to worst just remember simple physics and measure the length of the arm at the pedal end, compare to the length of the arm at the throttle
end and adjust the ratio to get the required travel.
I'd be pulling my hair out too if there was HP waiting to be unleashed !!!

Well, I think I have fixed it,
Ask my neigbors, I dont think they appreciated seeing me drifting into the neigborhood under power.
I took the pedal out of the car completely and re aligned the hinge pivot, which was heading off line and losing effective travel, Once I got it to
line up nicely with the pivot nice and tightly bound, I welded the loops solid, so they couldn't spread over time {as I had fixed this last year} and
then just tacked the pivot lightly to the pedal, so it can't wander.
Bolted it back in
and then remade a new linkage to suit as the old one was not suitable,
so with that all done, it seems much happier,
not sure if its getting full throttle for sure as I need to get someone to push the pedal while I check,
but it lost traction just under accelleration in second gear, which was a pleasant surprise, although the road was a bit moist, it feels like its doing
the biz now.
I guess I better start worrying about brakes now.:thumb
Thanks for the suggestions and I will keep that in mind if it gives me anymore grief.
Cheers Anthony
