Fast back boot question ++ seat question!! update

Well, not a real technical question,
In my '71 fast back there is a flap in the lining on the left side in the boot, when lifting the flap I can see straight onto the back of the outer guard (I can see the grill in the side).
On the right side it's all sealed up as I would expect.

Is this normal, or is there a steel panel missing from the boot? I don't have a pic, but can get one if needed.

The flap and opening is ~200mm long ~60mm high.
Richard

Hi Andy

That hole if you look at the top rim you will see 2 screw holes .
That is where the computer goes for the F1 so your car was Fuel Infected from new. As non Fuel Infected cars the plate is not cut out. I checked the non F1 body in the back yard and the area is solid.
You should be able to pick up a plate or make one to fit.

Hope this helps

Marc

Cool,
Thanks heaps Mark, yep mine's a TLE (auto), unfortunately the PO put dual carb's on. Still chasing him as he may have the FI burried in the shed some where. Fingers crossed!!
My aim will be to get FI back on it at some stage, so if I can't get it from the PO will be looking out for it else where.

I'm looking at doing the same thing. Make sure you get the entire FI set up including all the sensors and the fuel pump. The parts are very hard to find in Oz, I suppose this is why so many people removed the FI system. It is a fairly big job, I will have to make a new wiring harness as the old one has hard cracked insulation everywhere as well as broken wires.

Yep, that's why I'm hopeing the PO still has it all.
There's a running, registered FI type 3 in Brissy currently! Would be a great start :D

Go Andy Go!

I have been for a spin in a working FI TLE and it was no different from a set of really well set up clean carbs. Thing had not been touched in 2 years except oil.

Hoes the shafty/stinky/rholoff going?

Howdy Dude!! Got another kombi yet :D
My VW quota is full for the monent, three type 3's will be enough for now!
Yep, I don't expect any major benefits of FI other than put it back to original as it's a good original unrestored fasty. Original un-rebuilt motor even! Will keep us on the road while some other VW's get a resto.

Unfortunately Stinky Rohloff has stalled. I never managed to source the gears I need to make it happen, so I handed it all over to Dad to do the mods and make it work as is, but getting him motivated enough to finish it is not easy :duh
It will be finished, one day, just no idea when.

rear seat questions

OK, time to ask about type 3 rear seating options.
This is for late type 3's (post '69)
So what did the different models come out with?
Did all fasty's, Notches have a loose bottom half to the seat and fixed back rest, or were there variations through the later year models?
What did squares have? My '73 has a hinge at the front of the bottom half so it can fold forward and the back rest folds down to give a flat cargo area. Did they all have this?
And lastly were all type 3's 5 seater's?

My notch is the same, 3-point belts in front, 2 3-point belts at the back and one lap belt int he middle. Lower part of the rear snap in and the upper part bolted. I have never heard of a fasty/notch with fold down backs to resemble a square... maybe yours was manufactured using square seats. It's a good idea.

Hey Thanks Guy's,
For some reason my '71 fasty was registered as a '69 4 seater. MRD started asking for mod plates etc when I said it was a 5 seater.
They finally saw reason and accepted what was on the compliance plate, all fixed now.
No, the fasty has fixed back rest and clip in bottom as per normal. Was just wondering as it was in squares if it was available in fasty's or notches. Yes it would be a good option. Might look into it one day.
Just happy to have a good reliable daily driver again for now :)
Next step is a tidy up/fisholine and a good tune up, I think's it's been a while since this one had some TLC. Then I'll look into fitting EFI back onto it.

Well I finally discovered why I could not get power to the light in the boot on the fasty!!
It gets power ONLY when the parkers are on!!
I gave up trying to fix the light, then one night I went in the boot with the lights on, and hey presto it all worked!!

Is this normal, or has some one changed this on my fasty? Seems a bit of a strange setup to me.

Cheers,
Richard

This is normal. Power for the boot light is taken from the right tail light, so it only works if the lights are on. If you ask me, it would be logical for the boot light to work all the time. That way you could pop the boot, then go and put your stuff away without having to turn the lights on.

To do this you would have to find a power source which is always on. I am looking for one, so I'll let you know.

Thanks mate, only taken me a few months to figure this one out :P
Quirky old VW's!!!

I have to confess though, as much as I've fallen in love with the type 3's I've scored recently, their still UGLY suckers, particularly the rear end of the fasty. Well with the exception of yours purple!
Just my opinion though for those of you who like the look.

As for finding power that is always on, easiest source is from the fuse box. Check a wiring diagram to see which ones are live with ignition off, or just use a multimeter/test light. Alternatively if you want a closer source run a fuse from the battery (best to have a fuse in the line just in case!)

I have been wondering if I can rig one in the front "boot" also!

My rear or the cars'??

Funny, I've always thought the asses of fastys was their best side.

I was hoping to find something a bit closer than the fuse box. There must be something in the engine bay somewhere?

I reckon you could do the front boot fairly easily. The hardest bit would be mounting a switch in the right spot to come on when you open the boot.

I ain't never seen your rear purple, so won't comment on that one. :)
It was more meant your type 3 is something different.

Did type 3's ever have the VW test plug in the engine bay? I know my beetles and kombi's do (all post 1970 VW's).
That plug does have power all the time, but I have not noticed it in the engine bay of my type 3's.
If you have that plug, you could run a lead from there. Otherwise I don't know of any "live wires" out the back. The next closest thing is the battery or the interior light over the passenger door.

My fasty does have the test plug. At least I'm assuming that's what the big white rectangular socket thing at the rear of the engine bay is.

I guess alot of them have probably been ripped out by now.

Thanks, I might check it out tonight.

Yep, that's the one. Actually most lighting wires run to it also, so good for extra lights etc.
