Motorkhana Buggy


Evening all,

You are all jointly responsible for me buying a buggy, so you may as well see a photo of it!

I wanted a lightweight car for motorkhana and sprints and as a weekend toy, and didn't want a front wheel drive poo box. After lurking here for a while I decided on a buggy.

It's a Taipan on a 63 pan with a link pin front end and IRS conversion, the motor is suposed to be an 1835 and has a 40 dcn Weber.

The photo is from the 1st round of the WA State Motorkhana Championship which was my first motorsport event. I had a ball and did OK.
Everyone should get out and have a crack at this sort of stuff!

Yep, the guy is a a builder (or something related) and lives in Yanchep. I got about a bucket full of beach sand out of it when I had the roll cage out so I think it spent a fair bit of it's time jumping dunes. Do you know anything interesting about it's history?

Sounds like it has taken a bit of punishment. He told me that he needed to change the transaxle after doing some rollbacks....
He also fitted the 1835 after the original engine died. The rest of the car looked like it was fairly good condition when I saw it a few months ago, buggies can handle a bit of punishment.

The tranny was changed shortly before I got it. The pan seems to be in good nick except for a couple of big cracks in the tunnel either side of the handbrake (more punishment). I had to attack the cage and remove a few bars to get the seats back far enough for me so when I find a tube bender for hire I will be building a new cage to comply with CAMS Schedule J.

As for the fiddle brakes.....at the moment a sharp yank on the handbrake and a bootfull of throttle has to do (seems to work OK!) Fiddle brakes are on the list along with a good tune up, moving the fuel tank, new exhaust, body lift, beam adjusters, disc brakes, relocated battery and a metalflake paint job. I really think I need to get a huge whip antenna as well! I think I will be throwing money at this thing for a few years.

I want one of those Buggy Whip antennas too. If you find someone who has them, please let me know. Freight is really expensive from the US.

Hi ya Pete I recon we should try fiting those twin 40IDFs I got sitting in the shed. You can borrow them will im try to sort out my new ride. There jetted for a 1916 so would be OK on your 1835.
Just remember if Kathleen asks their yours!

mmmmmmm, twin carbs that would be a treat but I don't think I would want to give them back! The buggy is currently running like a POS. Pulled a spark plug and it was very sooty. I need to rebuild my carb now and check jet sizes, and change plugs, points, leads etc.

The only thing with the twin carbs is that you will have to cut up the body to fit them. They are meant to be much better though, performance wise.

Unfortunately, I have a long list of things that are more important that twins at the moment. But a couple of 4" tall F1 style air intakes covering velocity stacks could look interesting.

I have a set of 15x7 and 15x6 widened 4 stud wheels rolling around in the boot of the daily driver waiting for sand blasting and the disc brake conversion. I also have a set of 14" r spec tyres that need a set of rims for the next motorkhana, and in the shed I have 30" wranglers that need some 15" rims for when I go bush.

Not sure when I will be doing the conversion so I will just keep stockpilling wheels for now.

I am a fan of the old school chromies and low back seats in the first photo, although not how I would set up a street car.
