2l gearbox help
if you havent read my wish me luck thread, i took my bus to the mechanic yeaserday for a roadworthy, a couple of minor things were found, but when we
took it for the test drive a horrible grating noise came every time the gearbox was under load. the mechanic thought it was almost definitely a
bearing or bush that had seized near the clutch and promised to take a look at it today;
:cry just got a call from the mechanic this morning, somehow the shaft from the gearbox has UNSCREWED ITSELF, damaged the spline, damaged the diaphram
and obliterated the bearing, meaning that after 2 hours with 2 mechanics working, the engine is now out but the clutch is still stuck on the gearbox
and the mechanic is now talking about having to remove the gearbox's bellhousing!
has anyone heard of anything like this happenign before?

Sounds like a thrust bearing or main shaft bearing has dried and collapsed. Bearings do this if they dry out and get moisture, especially if they have
been sitting for a long time.
When we got our 2L box off a friend for free (sitting in his chook shed) and we put it in the bus it had very lod rumbling sounds that got louder the
faster you went. The box had to have all the bearings replaced.

I've got a good 1800 g'box sitting in the garage if you need one in a hurry. The final ratio is not as high as the 2l but it is not too bad
either!
PS it's got a 2l bellhousing.

thanks. i think (hope) the rest of the gearbox is fine, just some sort of freak occurance that the chaft has screwed itself out, obliterating the end
bearing, irrepairably damaging my new clutch and gouging my prro custom bellhousing. i am just surprised that these things can 'unscrew'? i thought
they would have been welded to the gears or something?!

didnt have the rumbling problems you'r talking about helbus, just grinding/squeaking noise, which went when either the clutch was fully in or fully
out. also, gearbnox has always been fitted with engine (except for about 1 - 2 weeks last year, and even then we had it wrapped in plastic to stop any
moisture getting in.
