Kombi Automatic gear boxes ... any good
Whats the drift on an auto kombi box. How strong are they ? I have found a kombi with great metal but it s auto, are they easily converted? Or are
they up to an engine transplant such as a V6 or subi?
Thanks Mitcl

I like the idea of an auto with the V6 (or subi if so inclined) the manual is geared to low for exceptable rpm's V km/h... |

The kombi auto is very strong , I seen some big motors like 315 fords running though them in off road buggys .
The bigest killer is the converter input seal , they leak , so to fix this you fit two of them in the box , no more leaks .
You can purchase seal kits and all the bands ect from drivetrain australia
as for the subaru conversion , here is a 003 type three box

My dads kombi has had 4 engine conversions so far, all behind autos. It went from Holden blue inline 6 to VN commodore V6 to 308 holden V8 to VN
commo V6 again. Only one of the gearboxes broke, but it was not because he was thrashing it, the custom flexplate was machined wrong which stuffed it
up. He has taken the van drag racing and the transmissions have held up well with no trouble. There is a bloke who has an auto transmission place near
pick and payless in blacktown who has heaps of experience building volkswagen autos and can make them stronger as well.
The main problem is that the gearing is way too short. The V6's or V8's dont particularly like pulling 3800 rpm on the freeway for extended periods
of time. At the moment there is no aftermarket taller diff or gear ratio's to bring the rpm down like there is for the manual boxes.
However, overhead cam engines like the subaru's are much more suitable for the gearing on the auto box.
