my engine wont idle! help me please.

i went for a little offroading/mud bashing in my baja the other nite and although it drove home fine in the morning. when i went to go to work that nite it wouldnt idle. i drove to work anyway as i had to get there. it was backfiring whenever i let my foot off the accellerator and had a small flat spot. i figured i had gotten some mud in my idle jet. so this morning.....well afternoon really. its morning for me.......i pulled the top of the carby and removed the idle jet. it was clear. i blew it out a bit anyway and replaced it. tried again.......nope still wont idle.

i checked the points. gap set fine......even removed them and had a look. dissy cap is newish and fine and rotor is fine. fuel squirts out when the accellerator is depressed. though when running u cant really see fuel in the clear fuel filter i have mounted before the fuel pump.

could my fuel pump have gone?

what else could it be?

shouldnt be everything is tight on the carby. and it was driving fine that day. it was only when i started it that nite that it played up.

ive tried putting my hand over the carbie throat when revving it up but that hasnt helped.

piss in the carby nick...:D:D:Dhahahaha

i dont have anypositive input....

maybe if your concerned about the fuel pump, disconnect the hose going into the carby and see if it pumps out fuel when you crank the car over...

the air leak can be in old hose, fuel pump, anything....

they say backfiring is normally from a lack of fuel...

thats about all i got dude! good luck..

you dont have vapour lock happenin? try undoin the fuel tank cap maybe?

Checked yer valves? Backfiring might be when one isn't shut right?

I had (have) some issues with my 1800, and one dude reckoned she's overheating, valve stem stretches, doesn't quite shut completely, and voila, she backfires on overrun. Then again, this (valve theory) doesn't explain the lack of any fuel in the main carby in my case!

They sure can be temperamental. Good luck, Aurel

Nick
Youve checked the idle jet, i'd suggest some crap in the air jet/passages that draws the fuel thru the idle jet.
This is the port that the idle screw is tapped into.
I wouldnt mind betting that that air passage is blocked causing your drama.

You could try blowing some carb cleaner, or even some compressed air into the port thru the idle screw passage.

I reckon that if the fool pump was dodgey, it would show up under power worse than on overrun.

Good luck

How's your exhaust? Had this problem many times with a small gap between one of the j pipes and the collector. My S beetle always used to carry on to no end whenever I knocked one of the j-pipes loose going to the thunderbirds with the Glasspack muffler.
Lack of backpressure can really upset an engine. Even a small gap can be nasty.

exhaust is A1.
dissy is dry as a bone.
valves are perfect. (only done about a month ago)
shouldnt have sucked anything thru from the tank as it has about half a tank in it. and a new fuel filter.

ill get a can of compressed air. (my compressor is back at dads place :() tomorrow and blow out the passages. thanks for the ideas guys.

ok why is it that no hardware stores in caloundra stock cans of compressed air. 2 of the store attendants didnt even know what i was talking about!!

i tried the put your hand over the carby and rev it up trick a couple more times which seems to have dislodged it a bit as now it will idle but a bit funny and somtimes will stall. still backfiring so im going to pull the whole carby off tomorrow and give it a good clean out and take it down to the servo and blow it all out with the compressor.

Dude check ya electronic fuel solernoid. This has a pin and ball on the end of it that shuts of fuel to prevent run on. If its stuffed it will remain closed bloking the fuel flow for the idle jet, hence why it only runs when you have your foot on the throttle using the primary jets. Unscrew the fuel solernoid and start the car with it out. See if it runs. I had a problem with mine sometime ago where it would not idle. Just kept stalling on me. That was the drama with mine. If it does idle fine with it out all together, pull the brass shaft and button off the end of it which will leave you with the bolt like end with the thread, screw it back in to block the hole and you can happily drive, just occasionally it may run on when you turn the ignition off. Mine is yet to run on and its been like it for mths. Hope this helps. If your uncertain about where the solernoid is i have incluided a picture. It aint the best but gives you an idea. On mine its hiding behind the fuel filter. I am running a 31 PICT carby.

theres still something stuck in there. its kinda fixed. i could pull the carby off but i really cant be bothered ill do it some day when im bored. it will idle now but sometimes idles lower and sometimes wants to stall.

and yes i thought it was a bit of a farce too. 17 bloody dollars for a can of air!!!!. there is no way the can and propellant cost 17 dollars.
