Problem with Horn !!!!!!

We have all seen it on TV and larfed but is not so funny when it happens in real life at traffic lights.........
Took Vern in for a rear wheel alignment yesterday when I went to pick him up the lady behind the counter told me that Vern was tooting his horn whenever he felt like it ! I said Oh ok ..........300 mtrs down the road at a set of traffic lights he started tooting and only stopped with the steering wheel in the "right place" Very embarrassment !
I pulled over sometime later and disconnected the horn completely as it got to the stage where it wouldn't stop tooting.
There is a bit of copper stuff sticking of the steering column that I susspect is the problem
Do I need to remove the steering wheel to fix this problem ?
Easy job ?

Prise out the center section of the horn push and you can see inside and see if the wire or spring is shorting out.
Use a small flat blade screwdriver to prise the push out.

I had my hands up in the air just smiling at people
I told the kids to wave ....to anybody / thing

this is a problem with VW horns as they have live power all the time and go off when earthed. so if a 40 year old wire in your steering coloumn earths. your horn goes off.

Vern

yours is a 74 right??

Yes you need to take the wheel off. It will sort of make sense then. The horn "pad" has a couple of contacts but they wont be the problem.

Use a wheel brace and take the steering wheel off. The indicator mechanism is there.
Yes there are 2 copper strips that make contact with the steering wheel. This will be where the problem is.
Worst case you will need to replace the switch mechanism.
More than likely something has got caught in the gap and pulled those copper tabs out of place

See how ya go and get back

Barry

I know how you feel, if my keys touch the metal sleeve around the column, they must earth the horn and it sounds.....pretty handy as the keys hang out of the ignition right beside it!

Worst if you turn right, keys lean to left and touch...argh....

Good luck.....

wow - im sort of glad to read this too!
i had some problems with my indicators, by the time they were fixed and the steering wheel put back on the horn sounded continuously as soon as i turned the ignition on - so i disconnected the horn at the wire bit under the front left hand side.

yeah thats what happens to them. straighten it with pliers and bend it so it will rub on the brass strip.

If it got a wear mark or hole you can soft solder it up to fix.
