Type IV into twincab splitbus...leo's nearly ready to roar.

After a fair but of procrastinating decided to fit leo’s big donk yesterday…..I’d measured everything, run 5/6 inch fuel line (with electric pump) all the way thru and plumbed the external oil cooler. Strapped the tranny. Modified the heater boxes (heat’s a good idea in a split in winter). Still hedged about putting it in case I’d missed something….

Well it went in fine. Not sure I’m looking forward to doing the tappets or changing the rear plugs, but actually no dramas so far. Have to modify the rear bumper to sit over the exhaust (prob need a heat shield built in too). Pic from LHS.

Pic from RHS. You can see lines to remote cooler running through a joiner block on the LHS side of the engine (can disconnect lines there to pull engine out) and modified air inlets for the heater boxes which now poke up through the rear valance.

I’ll use 2 bay bus heater fans to drive air through the heater boxes (and if I draw the (warmed) air from inside the cabin I should actually have really decent heater when needed)…I used a Creative Engineering IRS conversion where you cut out the gearbox frame horns and weld theirs in – everything from a 68/69 bay bolts straight in from there (I did go with later hubs to get the 112 PCD to match the front).

Few more leo pics. Stance with the engine in which is just about perfect. About as low as you can go and still be realistically driveable.

Finished the headliner, interior panels, restored the steering wheel. Have fitted oil pressure and oil temp gauges to keep an eye on the engine room.

Rear compartment

And rewired throughout. A shot for Dave Birchall – he was kind enough to send me this fusebox…..

Mmmmm. Nice.

You didn't consider going hydraulic if doing tappets is going to be such a hassle?

It's a V force mechanical lifter cam (and straight cut cam
gears) - doesn't seem to be much around in the way of
hydraulic lifter grinds? Although the reduced maintenance aspect
of hydraulics is very appealing...(hydraulics with triggered CDI ignition
would be as low maintenance as it gets...)

There is some room - it's just that I can see myself barking a knuckle
on the inner chassis every time I loosen a tappet jam nut!
More jam nuts that knuckles so some knuckles are going to
go twice (and that really hurts)!

Getting very keen to start this puppy - maybe next weekend if I can
get hold of a 12V starter........

buy an offset ring spanner, usually have the ring at each end, cut one off and weld a tube over it, cut to length, will clear all the sharp bits.
