UMM i have the same motor in my Mk1. 8v 1988 GTi motor. mine also makes a bit of a rattle when cold. I think it is just the lifters and similar buidling up oil pressure.

Not sure about later parts (eg mk3 and 4).

i run a close ratio 4 speed and also a 5 speed from some kind of rover i think which will bolt straight in.

I think and this is a BIG think later stuff may go in, and re audi vs VW, i THINK it will swap right over in most cases.

some one to ask may be Guy from harding european. he mainly deals in later model stuff now.

I have had several Mk 2 Gti's over the years, they have all have noisy tappets on initial start up.

I agree, its just the oil pressure building and the oil traveling round the engine. I wouldnt worry about it to much. As long as it goes away fairly quickly...... 45 secs a worst on a cold day
