Fuel relay problems

A friend of mine has put a Subaru 2.2 into a VW fastback. It is a nice fit. The problem happens when the ignition is turned on. The fuel relay starts clicking. The fuelpump does not pump fuel. He is using the stock wiring harness. He used the Kennedy diagram to rework the harness. This is not his first harness. He has built two Vanagons with the Subaru 2.2 and had no problems. This one has him puzzled. Any ideas on this?

how much does it click?
does it click on, then off about 5 secs later, or is it just on off on off, quickly?

Has he checked the output of the relay with a mulitmeter to see if it's giving 12volts when it switches on?

could be two things, faulty relay, or faulty wiring.

also, do a diagnostic check using the black plugs and see if it shows a fault code for the fuel pump.

It clicks quickly. I will pass this info along. I need him to get this fixed so he can do my harness.

If none of that worked try this.

Definitely do a diagnostic check with the black plugs. That should help you know if theres a problem.

First check everything is hooked up properly on the motor and the wiring is good. If that's all good but the motor is showing more than say three or four fault codes, you probably have a power supply issue with the computer. That can be caused by the main ECU relay. Apparently these can be a pain, and I should know, mine was stuffed last week and the motor wouldn't fire.

Thanks guys. He found the problem. A ground wire on the plug for the diagnostic hookup. Runs fine now. My car is going to his house on the 27th. He will weld the new roof on and build and install the wiring harness. Maybe after almost four years I will hear the engine run again. Now I have to hurry and get the front firewall installed and the fuel tank finished.
