Car update. Time to show off my car again!

Well i've finally got my new rear porsche 944 turbo brakes on the car so i've got 4 pot brembo's all round now. Braking is nothing short of increadable. No bias issues evident too, using a standard dual circuit master cylinder.

The rear brakes are 298mm rotors, 32mm thick ventilated. I'm using asbestos bendix front pads and semi-metalic rear pads. The larger brakes wouldn't fit under the 15" wheels so ive upgraded to cup2 wheels.

Here's some pictures...

Hey Ian,

What year brembos did you use? I have some rears from a 1988 944 turbo, but my hub is from n 84 944NA. It would appear I need to reduce the thickness of the mounting holes in order to use the brembos with the rear disk and carrier.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Steve

The front and rear calipers are 4 piston '86 944 turbo ones. The front hubs are 86 944 turbo, the rear hubs are 86 944T (not turbo, naturally aspirated), with 15mm machined off the center of the hubs. The machining is required because i'm using short early style axels.

The whole conversion for the rear's cost less than $1000. Got the calipers and hubs and backing plates off ebay for about $400 all up. 944T NA discs are new and cost $440 for the pair. machining free(done at work). Porsche alloy wheel nuts (front and back) cost $25 USD.

The front cost more due to the specialist machining and my lack of experience in tracking down porsche parts cheaply at the time.

Interior isn't finished yet but i'm working on that over the next few weeks. I'm hoping to take out best engineered at the ingham car show in 3 weeks.

Engine's a injected, turbo'd intercooled 1641cc race spec build up. I'm running 17lb now and it spikes to about 20lb. An estimated 225 hp.

Went for a drive on a "private road" last night and the new brakes are awesome stopping from speed. The car feels stable at 150k's and braking heavily (but steadily) from speed is awesome. I've realy got to clean out the car because everythign in the back of the car ended up in the front.

I'd like to have a gtech so I can measure my g's in acceleration and braking. :thumb

There is no doubt it is already the best VW in town. Ingham car show will be interesting. I've been promised an indoor display area in the pavilion.

Looking to the rev wars inside the pavilion. All the show cars are allowed to drop of their exhaust systems and rev their cars to redline for the croud, inside the pavilion!.

Should be fun!... 7000 RPM , turbo's spooling and blow off valve whistling! Sorry you'll miss it. I'll be taking a video camera to the event so i'll capture the moment and upload it.

i think i remember ian saying that he ditched the red shell as it had too much rust in it.

so this is a new shell.

not 100% though, correct me if im wrong ian.

but i agree. one sweet bug.

the rims make a BIG difference. and look much better than the fuchs.

i thought u were going porsche cup 3's though. what happened to that idea?

Yeah the red shell was full of holes and had become structurely unsound. The drivers side door pilar had completely torn away from the heater channel.

As for the interior, it will be a white factory roof lining, grey carpet, carbon fiber door and rear inside quarter panels (to match the dash).

I would have liked cup3 wheels but they are very hard to locate here in australia in 17", and 18" ones are mega expensive. Got to impose "some" limits on doing the car build up. :D

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Reub's wiring worked out pretty good, though it was tricky getting used to the old Haltech ECU, but for an old ecu its got some cool features. Sequential injection, anti-lag etc.... Its currently wired in as a multi-point staged system to control 8 injectors, but after reading the manual front to back i've discovered how to set it up as parallel injected full sequential. This will free up an output for controlling the intercooler fans based on air temp.

He'll post some pics when he's not so busy i'd guess.

Just out of morbid curiosity (and the hope that one day I too will have amassed the $ required to do my own turbo injected air cooled beasty), why did you stick with the quad throttle bodies if you were going turbo ?

I used to read a bit of the jap crap magazines, and they are always talking about 'plenum chamber volume should be ~ equal to engine capacity in a turbo'. I always figured the only way to get this on a vw would be a big single throttle body (a la XF falcon or something like that) and custom manifold. Also would make the intake plumbing less complex to seal ?

Just thought I'd ask as you obviously know what you are doing and have done it well.

I've always thought a turboed, strong 1600 would be the best compromise between power (shite, 225hp should be enuff for anyone !) and reliability / coolability.

There will be a few other realy hot cars there as well that friends have just finished putting together as well. Lots of airbrush work, flames and lightning etc..

The tranny is built by Shimmo from back when Hellbug was still trading.

Its a late model 1300 box with standard 1st, 2nd and 4th, berg 1.48 3rd, 3.875 diff, welded 3rd and 4th, forged selector forks, berg keys and a few other things. Its not built to handle 225hp, but it does so far because I'm not trying to lift the front wheels off the ground.

The moment I run it on a race track i'm sure to pop the diff, so i'm getting a custom rancho box, with bigger axels, maybe with a quaife, or super diff with poor mans posi.
