Engines


YES
Any VW engine will bolt into any earlier chassis series. You could take a 2005 engine and change the mounts, using the predrilled bolt holes and drop it straight into a 1976 golf. Or a Mk2.
You can use any 4 cylinder engine from VW Golf or Passat, or from an Audi or Seat.
With the fuel injected engines, some have injectors into the inlet manifold and some are into the cylinder head. Make sure you can hook it up befor you begin.
What motor will you put in 1.8, 1.9, 2L? 16v?

Gearboxes
The Later Mk3 ones are cable change, you need to change the whole mechanism, but they all bolt up.
Let me know if you do this, as I`d buy your old shifter linkages for converting my Jetta to manual.
Passat boxes are the same deal, cable change.
Audi engines are good, but the gearboxes are totally different.

What the loon said....

A guy I know in Sydney has a 90bhp Mk2 GTI engine in his Mk1, and has that chip. Reckons it is OK. Makes power a little more linear. Thats all.

Shame your Mk2 doesnt have a real GTI motor in it. The Euro spec engines (8V and 16V) were awesome. Mind you with the hefty weight of the late Mk2's, you would be better off with a 2.0 from a Mk3...

computer and injection


Easiest option is to merely change the block and head for another motor, but leave the injection and computer system the same.
The VR6 fits into the Mk1 and 2s if you get a welder a grinder and a lot of time and pain. Its also very heavy and parts are expensive. I`d go the 2L 8v or the 16v option.
The 8v is an easy swop, the 16v less so.

If you can wire the injection in, do it. Much better than carbs. VR will bolt in nicely. Too much weight up front to be anything but a straight line screamer, though.

I'm currently starting my own mk1 project...

Will be putting the 8v 2lt from the mk3's in it, then converting to 16v..

you'll need the 02a cable change box also form the same series...

you'll need custom mounts etc, but people make and sell these in quite a few places..

Dont forget that Seat Cordoba / Ibiza are the same mechanicals as VW Golf Mk3 cars and a lot cheaper to buy parts for. Some have the same rod change box as the Mk1 and 2 golfs 020 box and some have the 02a cable box, as per Mk3.

yeah, i've seen the seat's go cheap because they werent the most fashionable car at the time, and the owner didnt really know about their potential... same goes with the parts...

how easy is it to bump up the power on the euro spec 8v mk Gti motor?

any good mods? it runs the k jettronic injection.

In my EV engined Mk2 GTI (same as yours), I managed to tweak it to be a 7.5 secs approx car from a 8.5 secs car. I started by balancing all the bottom end components and gas flowing the head with some valve reprofiling. I then put on a Neuspeed 268 cam, and followed that with an adjustable cam gear. This has taken it from 112 to about (not really sure yet) 130bhp. Problem is, it cost a freaking fortune. So to answer your question properly, no. There are no shortcuts to getting more power out of a K-Jet euro spec GTI motor. Cheapest mod you can undertake is diferent injection. I have been told reliably that Motec could take it to about 130bhp and make it more economical for about half the cost of the work I have done. The only reason I havent gone down that road is historical value. I like my car to run standard, so all the mods are reversible. Cheapest would be a cam and cam gear, but it justs bumps the power/torque up higher, which can be good except you lose out a bit in low and mid range torque.

1.8 has about 90bhp to 2.0 115bhp. Its the torque of the 2.0 that makes it worthwhile. From what I know, you would need to modify the gearbox mount, but thats about it. The computer would be best off coming with the engine. It is tuned for the 2.0.
