yeah i think asking to beat the v6 commonwhores is a bit much. sure it CAN be done. but i imagine it will have to be a fairly decent 1776 or similar.

why mess around. get a rota up ya :)

then u can have fun blowing away most cars on the road :)

you can normally seem to get a jump on a lot of more powerful cars as they don't suspect a little beetle has any poke at all, but once on song they will catch up. you should be ok to beat most stanard 4's, but it depends on setup. the only time i can get 6's and some 8's is in the wet, when they sit there spinning wheels :thumb

it all depends

You stip you car to the bones and loose 100kgs and that will make a huge difference.

If you are boring it out then you are splitting the case. Dont bother with the 1835. Either 1776 of 1916
Put a stoopid cam in there and up the compression ratio to 9:1
Make sure you have a decent fully merged header and is jetted properly.
Upgrade the clutch.
Have a low ratio box

Even with midly ported stock heads you will scare a lot of cars

I ran a 1640 with a holley bugspray and twin quiet packs in my KG and she flew. Would blow all fours and some sixes away. Before they knew what'd happened you'd be gone.

The little beetle is fast off the mark, due to light weight and fairly low 1st and second gear. Once you half way through third the modern cars are on the march. I had a 1776 with a single 42DCN weber, stock heads, just balanced and valve grind, mild cam, and it would surprise a few people up to 80 - 90km/h. The surprise factor is important:party

yes but should they know you are out to race. they might do naughty things like launch at higher rpm in their powerband and then bam..no more mr nice beetle :(

i got a 1641, had twin kads, sold them, pertronix ignitor .etc

and i dont think it would blow anything away.

I used to have a 69 Bug with a 1776 and 40DCNF Weber, it was lots of fun from the lights. I raced a commodore down Smith St on the Gold Coast once, and it wasnt until 160klm/h that he started to overtake me, but the front end was starting to lift at that speed and the car was wandering all over the place. Very scary.

what sort of cars do you want to beat, how much you plan to spend and what is the car going to be used for?

These are the questions i got asked when i first joined the forum asking basically the same thing taht you are asking.

i thought it too hard to answer. but now i realise those are VERY important factors. say those answers and i'm sure a whole range of people could tell you what would be best to get. then you can mnake the decision from the list you are given as to what you will actually do.

See people i have actually learnt from your comments :p

a good mate has a 76 model beetle running a fuel injected 1968cc engine , that he uses as a back up race car for hill climb events.
I was lucky enough to take it on the last DNVK cruise (Euro Day).
On my way i pulled up along side of a 5ltr vs Ute.
gave him a bit of a rev up and he just laught at me.
Lights went green and i just launched of the line in the bug and just looked in the revision mirror as i watch him get further and further back.
mind you he had some serrious wheel spin action happening.the look on his face as he pulled up a couple a sets of lights latter was priceless.
I gave him a rev again and he shook his head.
I had a good day that day :D

That's the kind of fun we are talking about.
We all know VW's aren't the fastest thing on the street, but we love them anyway, and don't mind giving people a fright or a laugh!!

:P
