Herbie Racer

Just thought would post some pickies of my "herbie" racer, which competes in Historic events, sprints, hillclimbs etc. We ran it last weekend at Morgan Park (Warwick) for the first time with the Pobjoy motor- still have a few bugs to iron out but all indications are it will be a fun little car, for not a lot of money...(well compared to others it competes against)

Should have some action photos towards the end of the week.

Photos

The headlights have to be taped for racing purposes, they just have race tape crossed over, probably not the best of shots... if it is a fine day tomorrow, will pull the car out and send better ones of the cage etc.

There were two other beetles running on the weekend- ran by Tom Law in Sydney- will be getting those photos on Friday.

I hate to admit it but the Porsche is real..... aaaaargh that hurts... and belongs to someone on the forum.. Speaking of whom, must thank Brendan (Pschyo) for all is help with the bug... the man is a guru (and yes that hurts as well)

Porsche times...

The only other Porsche running was a 356 and unfortunately we drew different races, but Herb was way quicker in the times and I couldn't catch it whilst I was driving the FJ.. is looking very promising for the next big meeting in August at Qld Raceway which just happens to be featuring Porsche and VWs. By then I should have some new tyres, as Herb wasn't handling the best with the current setup, I was sliding around every corner, and whilst that was fun, it isnt good for times...

Is herbie still King and Link pin and swing axle?

What are the specs for your front end, how much negative camber can you manage?

Are you running a camber compensator on the back?

Specs

Yep is running a Compensator on the rear with the swing axle, front end is lowered, but havent fiddled with the camber yet- but is on the list of things to do. Is King and Link Pin but with a Sherman Disc Brake conversion.

and yes I am waiting for the photos as well....

Your front is the same as mine, only mine is raised. I've got the sherman kit too. Which calipers have you got, RX2 or 323?

and what pobjoy motor, 1916?

would also like some more info/photos of the cage.

Did the builder design it, or is there somewhere that has typical specs/diagrams? rough cost?

Cheers:D

Whats the deal with beetles and no. 53? I don't fully understand the whole thing.

Annnddd wheres the pics? I'm starting to wonder if this car goes?

Cage

The cage was built in Brisbane , it is just a half cage and is bolt in, but not your pissy 4 point variety- fully Cams compliant and blue plated for the road. The bloke builds cages for Historic vehicles for a living, the Cams manual specifies what can and cant be done.

Cost was around $1100-$1200.. which given the finish I am happy about.

If you want to know anymore just give me a call or pop around and have a look.

Yep the preferred method is to have them wrapped around a horizonatal bar between the rear stays, will take a photo- it distributes any load more evenly as opposed to the old method of tagging and bolting.
