facet fuel pump noise
OK,
I've fitted one of those 2-4 psi facet 'square' electric fuel pumps
to feed Leo's webers. No probs with petrol supply.
I've got it mounted under the tank (sideways but I can
weld on a mount to rotate it to upright) and the thing
is making enough noise to kill a brown duck. It's vibrating and 'banging'....it's solid mounted to the frame at the moment..
Is the pump stuffed or do they all knock meaning I'll have to
isolate the mount (rubber mount it) to reduce the noise?
Did a search and some stuff on-line suggests the noise is quite
obstrusive unless they're rubber mounted....
I thought electric fuel pumps just made a 'ticking' noise!

just put one on my Oval, as I thought the mechanical one was stuffed.
it makes a fair bit of noise. not really banging though.
just like a pulsing noise.
i don't think it makes any difference what angle it is on as to how much noise it makes. I did the experiment before I screwed it down. |

yes they are a bit noisey
quietened mine a little by mounting it on porsche rubber fuel pump mounts (the type with a 6mm stud sticking out each side)

yep
I`ve ran them before and they make a bit of noise.
They also run better pushing fuel.
So just a hint to people with a beetle , mount it under your tank.
Everything 36HP !

Hi
I used to run twin tanks in my bug, the noise was useful, it let me know when the small tank without a guage was empty so that I could swap tanks. As
buboy said they must mounted under the tank and at the angle that is descibed in the instructions.

yep they bang like a dunny door in a gale --------rubber mount the thing that will help a bit but they are very noisy |

Makes my beautiful phat type IV sound like a
frigging diesel. Introducing pressure knock
in the fuel line too! What a racket!
Scouted around and carter makes a rotary pump
with inbuilt reg to 4-5 psi which should be OK. Still
pricing although it looks like it'll be roughly 2x price of facet....
Gonna have to go that way I think..

I bought a cheap rotary pump from Repco, quiet (compared to a facet), but needed a regulator. It is a no namer. CB performance do a 3 - 4 psi rotary
pump.

Going to try the carter 4070, rotary pump comes with
rubberised mounting bracket, doesn't require
external regulator,recommended by

$180 new here.

I just installed a brand new carter rotary, (can't remember which model as the box is at home) it was the one with internal regulation 3-5PSI
I think mine cost a little less, but about that mark.
It makes a little noise but not that bad, well once the dells are sucking and the open 2 inch is going can't hear it. makes a small humming noise
when priming though. Also i ended up putting in a regulator as mine was putting out 5 PSI at the pump and 4.4PSI at the engine, and one of the 4
throats was flooding.
also try and get a little device, its for LPG installs , but it runs of your coil and works like a relay, but on pulses for the switching current. It
also primes the pump when you switch the ignition on.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

Dells normally only like 2.5 - 3 PSI. I have had the same problem with overflow into a throat, currently using a holley reg.
The mallory pump (quiet) and a return type regulator is probably the best set up, the dead head regs put the pump under a bit of pressure.

If the pump is mounted on sheet metal like panel work it will magnify the resonance try mounting on backbone of the chassis
ps. golf air filter mounts are great they use 6mm studs

Rob you need to get some rubber mounts as someone else said... or put a bit of neoprene rubber between the bolts n chassis
Anyway when can i pick up my new Kombi Twin Cab ???
