cost of rebuild

has anyone had some experience on the cost and parts availability of rebuilding either the 1.9 or 2.1 water cooled kombi motors?
is this a better option than an EA81 Subaru conversion?

Oh boy - THIS will be interesting!

As far as i know the water cooled VW flat four would have to be THE most expensive of the clan to rebuild.
Hoses are like $1500 a set.
Bearings........ dont talk about bearings......
Heads.....hah! you thought bearings were dear!

Dont let these guys scare you off. They are expensive, but.... I dont know exactly ....... but I can tell you who does.

Talk to Kurt Phillips at V-dub repairs and spares in Fremantle, W.A. He has a 2.1 supercharged water boxer in his beetle, and has rebuilt several of these lately - he will know prices and suppliers for the hard to get bits.

When you do find out, let us all know ?

Then dont put a subaru in the car :) ...

Do you have to put water cooled in the car ? (think outside the square)

Or perhaps you could stick a rotary in there ... at least then its not a subaru :)

HAPPY to be proved wrong!
My info is just quoted prices here and there, the internet and various mechanics telling me to stay away when i was fixing Daisy - an air cooled Vanagon.

Where have YOU been shopping?
