Squeaky Speedo

My bug's speedo squeaks in cold weather! It's a rythmical squeak that gets faster as the car goes faster, and I can see the needle wobbling slightly in time with the squeak. What is the best way to fix the squeak?

Unscrew the cable from the back of the speedo and put some light oil like sewing machine oil down there.

Lubrication should help the cable to loosen up.

Nope!

I'll have a proper look at it over the weekend (if I can find the time)
