Runnink as Rich as a Mofo
G'day dudes,
I have a 1500sp with a 30pict-somethingarather which i have in my 68 beetle at the moment and for some reason it running rich, so much so that when I
screw the fuel mixture screw all the way to the lean side it still produces some black smoke on quick throttle blips. Could this be a sticking needle
or something like that? Should I pull the carb apart and clean it or is there something simpler?
Any suggestions are much appreciated

What is a Mofo? STEP 1, check your timing is not retarded,
STEP 2 the screw you are turning is the Idle mixture only, if you screw it right in & the engine is still running it is getting fuel from
somewhere else, take the aircleaner off & with the engine running & the choke flap open, look down the carburettor (you may have to use a
mirror) , if you can see petrol dribbling down onto the throttle butterfly, that is your problem, simplest cause of this is flooding at the needle
valve & seat in the float bowl, simplest cause of that is a little bit of dirt stuck there not allowing it to close fully, if you know what you
are doing take it apart carefully & clean it, you may not see the bit that caused the problem, then- before you put the fuel line on, put the fuel
line in a glass jar disconnect the high tension lead from the coil & crank the engine for a coupla seconds or a few times by hand to clear any
dirt in the fuel line, then start it & see how you go REMEMBER one step at a time otherwise you will never know what you fixed. :alien |

I checked the carb and I noticed the solenoid(? with a wire attached to it) was loose so I screwed it back in and the mixture adjustment screw works
fine again(thats how loose it was).

jboy82 - I had exactly the same problem with the 30pict/2 on my 68 the other day - it started chewing fuel and I KNEW it was in tune (had done a
tuneup a few days before), then found the idle shut-off solenoid had worked loose.
You'd think it would make the engine run lean (air leaking through the threads) but no - super rich is what happens.
It's a fine brass thread in the soft metal of the carby so it can't be screwed in HARD and the weight of the solenoid tends to work it loose
occasionally.
