Hard to start
Hi All
I have a 73 type3 with a 2L type4 motor in it.
Which my daughter has been using for the last month and still is ( as her jap crap has died !! She now want a beetle about tme to!!!!!)
There weeks ago I put a electric fuel pump it as the standard one was leaking, I put the pump under the fuel tank where VW put the pump for the FI
cars, and then put a new hoses at the front and form tunnel to the cut of switch which is just outside the tunnel to the engine with a filter in
line.When the car was here for the weekend I found that it was hard to start when cold It would turn over and want to start but takes ages to start
but once it does start it idles nice and smooth and the car drives well. My daughter then tells me that she thought that was normal and just turns it
over and when it tries to start just floors the pedal she keeps doing this until it starts. I have just checked the valves and they all are on 6 tho.
It seems to start when you pump the hell out of the throttle while turning it over . Have I missed somethng when putting the pump in ? or is it in
the carbies.
Any ideas would be great, as I have to drive 40 mins to her place I will wait untill I have a few Ideas from you people and check them all at one
time.

Just had thought
Now that the people who know me are rolling around the floor in fits of laughter with me having a thought.
Could the problem be with the points has i did not check them ?

I guess check pump for flow at the carbs first to be sure, if that's fine a service just to check things over.
Other things to consider, vacuum leak, choke operation, dirt in idle circuit etc??

sounds to me like its taking the engine a while to get fuel... Is the pump turned on when the coil is charged? If so what happens if you leave the
ignition on for a bit then try and start?

definitely check the fuel system. I used to have the ages to start problem. After a long, long time I checked out the motor to find the problem.
Short answer, evaporative loss from the carb bowls.
Long answer: As near as I can tell most of the top bolts were left off one of the carbs when I had the carbs serviced. one of the carbs tops could
actually flap around! Now wonder it was always running badly on bumpy roads.
Anyhow, when the car is cold, just see how much fuel is in the float bowls. its possible its leaking out somehow.
If at first you don't succeed. Build, build again.
Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based LCA pop-top camper. Motor: Nippon 1.8L Single port Wasserboxer, Transmission: 3 rib 002.

Hi guy's
Thanks for your ideas.
I went up to where my daughter works.
Checked to see if fuel bowl is full--- yep full
Yep the charges when coil has power
So i did what Andy said a did a service check
I know the valves are ok did tem on Saturday
Checked points nealy closed so reset them and check and set timing
end of story she started the car this morning started first time and ran smooth.
So again thanks for all your Ideas and help

If you have a few spare minutes at a later date, check the thread of hole for the screw holding the points in place. If they closed so quickly the
thread may be a little funny. It's not the best material for a thread to be anchored in and tends to wear over time.
I think it was my kombis old dizzy that had that problem. I had to replace it anyway. Too much vertical play. I'd hit a bump and the van would stop.
If at first you don't succeed. Build, build again.
