installing a stereo in a bug
Im about to install my mp3 /cd player in my car ,im installing it into the glove box.Does anyone have any information on the best way to wire up a
stereo into a 12volt 64 bug.I just want to do it right the first time so Im getting in early,so any information at all would be awesome.Im also unsure
which way to go with the speakers ,im thinking either kick panels or the same as Jnr356 set up or maybe the picnic basket job like bennettonvw. cheers

can you buy inserts that will sit neatly in the glove box, with the rectangle cut out for the stereo?
ill help you wire it up if your worried, no frazzling wires!

made my own insert out of mdf works fine just gotta trim it .fits nicely and way easy to do.No frazled wires hey.

I recently installed a cd player into my Beetle, and all is good.... except since I've got an Auto it leeches a lot of power and has the tendency to
turn off and on whilst driving. 
Mine's in the usual spot, not in the glove box, and only one longer length of wire was needed.... so I'd say since yours is going in the glove box,
you may need some wire and a soldering iron handy?
I've got kicker panels for my Beetle now, thanx to my wonderful bf Egeworks... but am yet to put them in with speakers. Can't be too difficult
though! I think they're the way to go.
Anyway, hope your music-installing adventure goes well!

the wiring up should be pretty simple... depending upon the stereo there's really only three wires that need connecting, the rest are for
speakers...
should be red for power when ignition is on, yellow(varies from brand to brand) for power when ignition off (powered all the time to keep the memory
going for the preset radio stations) and the black wire to the chassis. Rest of em should be for speakers. If the stereo is new it should have a
wiring diagram

It's dead easy to fit a new stereo to almost any car (except +ve earth ones. Argh!).
Others may disagree with me on this, but I like to make sure the stereo's body is earthed to the body.
Usually I have the stereo running from it's own fuse. Partially because previous owners have done some interesting wiring to the cars. Also because I
like to isolate things. Also you may not be happy with the 'on' condition of the wire. Ie. When it is active.
In my van I added my own setup which ensures the radio always works, whether the car is on or off.
In the beetle I wish I had set up the amplifier to turn of when the car was off. It got left on a few times by accident. I only needed the amp to hear
over the engine when it was running anyway.
Very wise choice putting it in the glovebox. Some bright spark had fitted their own stereo to the beetle in the original position. Did a very bad job
of it.
I fitted a new stereo in my van in the old hole. I even reproduced the lip around the hole, albeit a little roughly. The cm or so alteration
vertically was easy. the mm width difference was a nightmare!nn[ Edited on 21-7-2005 by General_Failure ]
