Cleaning up gearbox

Hey all,
just a quick question. Was hoping to paint up my gearbox so it looks cleaner. I have hit it with a pressure washer and is clean from crap but how do i go about doing this with the drive shafts.

The boots are stuffed so i will take them off no worries.
Can i then remove the drive shafts? or should i just remove the boots, paint the box, and then install new boots?

Trying to find the best way to go about it with out pulling it to bits when i dont have too.

Any advice welcomed. Thanks in advance. :thumb

I think you can take off the drive shafts on a beetle, u can on a kombi. Just undo the 8 (i think) hex head bolts and the drive shaft pops off. it will take you probably 15mins. But make sure you clean the hex head part (for allen key). Make sure there is no crap in the hole so you dont fark it.

Im presuming its a swingaxle box?
If so its not such a simple matter of undoing the retaining plates and removing the tubes.

Youll need to remove the brake drums, backing plates, spacers and bearing retainers and bearingss, then undo the swingaxle bearing plates and presuming you have no dramas, the tubes should slide off leaving the axles attached to the gearbox.

Youll need to replace the gaskets, seals and O-rings while you are at it. Its often a recipie for future leaks if you use the old gaskets and seals even if they appear OK at a glance.

Unless you are really going the whole nine yard then you may be better off to just clean it, degrease it, sand off any chips and scratches and just paint away the whole gearbox/axle assy and then replace your boots AFTER your done.

No sense in creating a lot of work on a part that lives under the car and is subject to everyday shit and grime!!!

Just my 2 bobs worth.
