stop lights?? some ideas for my T1 needed

hey all,
the stop lights on my 54 T1 seem to be playing up..

i did the clean up the earth senarios, checked all connections and fuses etc but sometimes when you put the foot down on the pedal hard they light up, then the next time they only half light up n another time they don't work at all..?? (not in that order but random)

the only thing i haven't checked is the stop light switch..
the connections feel fine and tight but maybe there is some crap residue making the little blighter bugger up..
i replaced it about 8 yrs ago when i did a mech refit on the beetle, so maybe its time for a newy.. i dont know..
btw brakes are perfect, top of the pedal, like new..

any ideas ppl..
thanks heaps in advance... :thumb
cheers paul

Hi Paul

Hi Paul,
You may need to clean the terminals on the stop lamp switch... also polish the fuses and fuse holders so that they are "as new"... ie like they were when they left the factory... copper gets contaminated very easily, even the fuses can get contaminated and get hot or act as a resistor in the circuit... I recently polished My Son's fusebox in his 69 Baja beetle, I even had to polish the fuse ends as they were contaminated too...
I used a small 12v dremel type tool with a small wire brush.
I always polish the earth braid at both ends and under the braid where it touched the chassis... a new bolt can help too.. this maybe overkill.... but can make the world of difference too.. Best of luck

try this quick fix..pump the pedal a few hard times ..exert high pressure..this may force a better contact within the switch itself..lack of use gums the contact inside the brake light switch..replace it ...does it still have the screw terminals?..if spades have been fitted check the quality of fit and product..hope this puts[stop] light on the matter cheers steve
