Cracking Flex Plates - KOMBI

Hey Guys, I have a 1976 kombi auto with a std 2lt motor. My problem is i tare the center out of a my auto's flex plate every 6 months. 5 to 7 thousland km? I have a minor shudder on take off sometimes, cold or hot, fluid level correct and it comes and goes. This is what must be flexing the plate and cracking over time. It has never got worse in 3 years and motor and auto work perfectly( except for 4 flex plates) with no extra noises...........Seen so many people about this in three years and no one has been able to fix this problem. Can any one help me........There is a carton of :beer on offer for the correct fix. Thanks Matt

I've seen this happen to a series 2 bluebird a few years ago.

The only reason for it, that I can think of, is some sort of miss-alinment between the engine and gearbox. Maybe a cracked or warpped bell housing or somthing along those lines.

It could be a bent input shaft or an out-of-balance torque converter.nn[ Edited on 7-8-2005 by BajaChris ]

Hi guys,
I had this trouble with my type3,Replaced the plate twice and did it again the auto seemed to be working ok, replace torque convertor with same auto and motor did the same thing so bit the bullet and replaced the auto 2 years later all fine, I think it must have been something in the auto was worn in the shaft area. I was lucky that I had a spare auto. So I would check the auto,as the mechanic that was doing this for me had never seen it before he spoke to all his mates in the trade and they were stumped has well.

hope this helps

Marc

The problems that happen are the following

1) The converter bearing needs replacing .
2) The nut on the motor is not locating the nose of the converter.
3) the converter needs to be cut open and serviced , removing all the crud and resetting every this as new
4) The Flex plate does just that ( flex )
On my new toy the converter pulls back to the motor when under power .Stress is around this area when power is put down , hard starts kill them .The old P76 was bad for this stress cracks > more cracks in them than a girl school !

5) would this be the Auto I purchased from You marc ? converter bush was replaced $14.70
