new p plate rules... in or out?

i reckon the only thing the new rules will do is decrease the number of import race tuned cars crashing and increase the number of teenagers crashing smaller and ill designed cars at speeds the car is not capable of handling.

that being said i feel sorry for the people on this forum like alex holzl who will have to live with the rules regardless of their driving ability.

i am not affected by the new rules, but i'd like to know your opinions

actually quite a lot of performance car parts are banned, several of which are on alex's car. car parts built specifically to incease power are banned, however little things like extractors are not.

thats what i have been led to believe

Yeah thats what i thought but it says:

Prohibited vehicles are those with:

Eight or more cylinders.
A turbocharged engine.
A supercharged engine.
*Engine performance modifications.*
Certain high performance six cylinder engine vehicles

So im spewing but ill write in saying i wanted somethin with alittle more power so i dont get in the way on the road... lol

the rules are inconsistent. because a 5 or 10 year old daihatsu use turbos to actually allow its 60kw (ish) cars to move somewhere, they are assumed a rocketship and are banned. however, p platers can drive any current model 180kw falcon or 190kw bombadore. i think these rules reinfocre the government's ignorance in actually trying to reduce the road toll.

are there any regulations about the angle of the seat back. Why not just name the 'banned list' by model - they do it for importable cars, every insurer has a database - how hard can it be.

i think it should be based on a power to weight ratio, the same way as bikes are done

they should be spending their money on actually educating and training us instead of thoughtless blanket bans to impress the average ' a current affair ' viewer

The rules in Victoria are power to weight based, but I still see stupidly modified cars with five teenagers in them.

My cousin used to drive far too fast in a Morris Marina (yes, that is a very crap car) and we used to go for drives with him. Until I realised that he was driving far too fast even for my tastes.

A copper is not going to be able to recognize many of the best mods to engines (blue printing and fine tolerance parts, lightweight pistons, larger injectors / fuel pumps, ported heads, hand tuned ECUs) by visual inspection alone. Yet, doing those things can raise an engines power over stock by more than 25%. Only the drain pipe morons who have this fascination for no back pressure (and an extra kW or two) will get caught by these regs.

These are definitely stupid - and I bet they'll talk themselves into a corner and it'll be years before they can be changed.

i agree... there was an article in the vic heraldsun a few weeks ago about this issue... stating that they want to just automatically ban turbo cars... yet that would include one of those "smart" cars with about 60kw... lol... how stupid is that....
it should be done on power to weight as is currently(??) done in vic... and we have curfews and passenger limits etc too - only if you lose points on your license tho....
as usual they concentrate on the wrong end of things.. they should be putting more effort on driver training and changing the attitudes of young drivers.

from another forum i'm on. a few mates of mine in geelong the other night had this to say...

[QUOTE]
There was a big accident in the Botannical Gardens last night.

A white VT SS with passengers looked as if it was speeding through the back roads of the gardens. He lost control and slid sideways into a tree. Driving on the left hand side of the road and hit on the rear drivers side passenger side door.

The car caught on fire on impact and was alight for about 20mins until the CFA came.

Channel 7 and 10, Police, SES, CFA and ambos everywhere.

It was a big reality check to see this car fully alight on fire and for this guy to be trapped inside. He didn't make it out.

Take care on the road guys, don't do stupid things in stupid places, and watch out for the crackdown on 'hoons' as a consequence of this.s

Boost for the street should be set around 16psi making just on 500hp at the flywheel all being well

secondary boost option on the Apexi controler will be changed for 1/4 Mile racing. This is where the boost will be set to just over 32psi and c16 race fuel will be used for a aimed 650hp and the flywheel. On race fuel the goal is to run a 10.90

I dont think thdese laws will help anything myself... big engines dont crash cars... dickheads do.

Most any car made within the last 40 nyears will do 100k's... e3eaisly enought to kill you in an accident... hell, you can die in a head on at 50! Like jeezus... most of opur VW's are capable of at least 110 stock, and that's on 4 cylinders in a 40 year old engine... my Kombi maxes at 130kph... a graveyard speed in an accident.

The way I see it, if bigger cars are progressively bamned... kids will just push there shitty little Korean deathtraps way past there limit's... and these cars werent designed to handle at rediculous speeds.

Not that there is any less chance of them being involved in a serious accident if they are in a a big fast car... the risk remains. However it stands to reason that anybody stands a greater chance of survivng a meeting with a pole or tree in a n Falcon than they do in a crappy old Charade or Barina. and they are more likely to lose control of a car and die at high speeds in a small poorly made econobox.

my point is, the governments logic is screwed up... the only way to cut th road toll is to either have everyone putting around in 1949 Kombi's, or get rid of the nobs off the road, or better still, educate young drivers so there are no nobs... banning V8's is just a useless kneejerk solution, and achieves nothing.

anywho... the laws dont affect me, unless I decide to put a V8 in my Kombi :)

My youngest got his L's yesterday. I asked about an exemption - but it isn't needed until he gets his P's, so he had his first drive in the M5.

I'm trying to convince him that the Squareback is what he needs (its just sitting there .......) but he reckons he doesn't like the look of the rear end! He'll change his mind when no-one else gives him a car to carry his big Marshall amp in....
