it all depends how much you can do yourself. I spent less than that on my conversion including a rear disc brake conversion.

So instead of arguing about it lets help the man.
Easy conversion, a SOHC subaru motor. If you are prepared to play with EFI then the late Subi motors are the best bet, EJ18 (1.8L) and EJ22 (2.2L).
If you would prefer to stick with carbs, then look for EA82 series Subaru motors. Earlier Subi motors (EA81 etc) were pushrod and are getting quite
old so I see little value in converting to then unless you already have one in excellent condition.
Like the others mentioned if you start really upping the power you WILL need to consider the brakes and suspension, and the upgrades here will
cost.
Don't forget that a bug is light, so unless you want to make a supercar out of it, a small conversion (say 1800 subi motor, 110Hp according to
Ravensblade) will go quite nicely.
Good luck
Jeremy

| I agree with Wes,how much can you do your self. Its question of saving dollars or getting it
right!...Engine..suspension..Brakes..Rads with longer water pipes...etc...etc $4-5k:o..like I said earlier. If only doing a subie engine transplant no
mods under $3000 anywhere.......Jako Rizzos Engine Transplant is a good example to go buy for saving money....JVLRacing

id keep my eye out for a chev corvair someone is still building them for planes in melb??? could b gold coast??? this negates the need for
radiator(air cooled) etc if you drive it responsibly you wont need to upgrade the brakes or suspension ( kombis are after all comercial vehicles) and
this way you wont have to rebuild/replace the g box
mate ive put rotaries p76's nissan's chev's subies in splits all running 10r15's and NEVER had to ugrade the brakes/ suspension
(cant say gboxes--done plenty)
but if your split is reasonable cond its prob worth while keeping a vw based motor for around 7 you can build a decent motor
as i said to the guy wanting to "build a baja" it really depends on 3 things
1 your intended use for your car(drags beach sreet dailydriver)
2 your experience/confidence
3 your budgetnn[ Edited on 22-8-2005 by dubbill ] |

Id say spend a little more time trolling through all the conversions on this site - there are heaps, and some great info on many! Its really horses
for courses - so you probably need to be more specific on what u want i.e. 300hp - 110hp...etc... There is detail in here on holden V6, some on Lexus
V8, Baja Wes's page on the V6, Twin turbo 20b rotary, subi from 1.6- 3L, corvair, etc etc even the humble VW donk hey VWCOOL
also have a look on http://www.dsk.com, and ask them!

Also so depends on when you want it done. Often it takes longer to do it yourself.
Im having everything done for me and no way will it come in under $7k.

My conversion cost me $3800, thats engineered, drive away no more to pay.
It can be done. Just take your time & plan it all. I planned for months before even buying anything.

Personally, I'd steer clear of putting a motor that big in a split. The chassis isn't designed for anything like that much torque. An ej22 or a
corvair motor would be real nice though.

I also planned a lot before I bought anything. All my parts I bought including consumables and rear disc brake parts cost me $4121. After the
conversion I sold $750 of parts from the front cut that I didn't use (gearbox etc) bringing the conversion cost down to $3371. Then I sold my old VW
motor for $2300, which meant all up the final cost was $1071.

IN THE WEEDS has been talking to me about selling his car seperate, with the conversion bits as one. ej20t, adaptor and flywheel, new microtech with
controller, intercooler and awesome cold air box(who made that I wonder), radiator, surge pot, fuel pump etc....All you need is radiator pipes($150)
and fab up exhaust.($300)
Talk to chris about price, its all there..no searching required. There is about $4000 worth of stuff.
Get a disc brake conversion on the front and 4 new shocks and you would be sailing around the $5000 mark.
