Just in case you where interested?
Well this is my ride in progress, please forgive me if I sound vague, sometimes I forget to put all the info in, if you have any Q's just e-mail
me.
Body is an 1302S '72, brakes are 944 front and rears, rear, rear suspension is stadard in form but has thicker rear torsion bars (1mm) and
adjustable dampners. front suspension is a bit more difficult to explan, I have biffed the standard arms that use the sway bar as a stressed
suspension arm and made a new 'A' system withg rod ends, so there is now new barckets at the front and rear of the "hammer head "
section and an inderpendent swaybar will mount off these suspension arms, the shocks are heaverly machined Golf Mk1 units, top monts are solid ball
BMW adjustable for caster, (camber is done on the strut and on the arms).
The motor is to be a ( It's at the engine reco's now) Type 4 2366cc, running Microtech computer controled Toyota fuel injection (4 throttle
plate type).
The look is going to be Resto Cal as thats what spins my dails but I prefere the German look mechanicals, I am doing most of the work myself hence way
im into year 3 but there is not one week that goes by with out something being done.

Hello 555Bug,
Errr sorry about the large pic.
Still have not worked out to post more than one pic per topic box. So bare with me.
Please note that the pic with the wheel on is an early pic and the arms have been changed to the later black type. And the bottom ball pin has been
painted black, to prevent rusting, please also note that the pin is made from 4730 or was it 4340 or 4530....... or 4560...darn I can't remember
cromoly.

awsome setup...its great to see people doing some custom stuff. Just out of interest how has this setup improved the performance of your bug? and
what would you do differently if you were to do it again? Hey have you checked out the thread on the germanlook forum...plenty of people talking
about trying this mod. |

Hello 555bug,
As far as improved performace of the car I don't know as I have not been able to drive it yet (mid resto) it rolls down the drive ok?? As for
" if I was going to do it agian" I don't know of any thing that I would change, Im not saying it's perfect, but it all seems ok at
this point, Ive had to do some interesting mods to make it work thou, if you have a look at the position of the master cylinder, and the longer push
rod. The master cylinder is from a Suzuki swift ( Ithink they are called Holden Barinas in Aussie) as it had all the right things going for it , brake
line ports to the right side, the right bore size, and a 2 tubes for the remote resvior so I can keep the standared one.
I'll check out the Germanlook forum now thanx for the tip.
Below is a pic of the inlet manifold that im making, Toyota top half and Hilborn Type 4 lowers.

Hello Ovalglen,
I cut all the pieces that where needed, then a guy welded them all up for me, I also got him to weld the ends smaller as they where just to big ( made
for a 2.8 ltr 6000 rpm TQ miget ) this all cost me $180 NZ dollars or about 60 pounds sterling in UK dollars. I still needed to fill all the flat
spots and make a constant taper to the end, I have used Wurth F1 epoxy metal to do the final shaping, in total I have spent about 25 hours on them and
they still need another 5 spent on them, a lobour of love ah!!

I was wondering how much the welding part alone cost ?
Yeah , those bits shore do add up.
And the time...... best not to count.
I just have difficulty getting out in the shed to do it.

The welding part along cost $180 NZ dollars, a bit pricey but the guy is as master and it was a tricky job.
Just heard from the beater, he has started !!!! this has been bit of a battle, as he is a very good panel beater which means he is busy all the time
and does'nt like taking on the big projects, but final he has started, he told me that the sand blasting w**k*rs hit it to hard and my 30 year
old streight shell is now all warped!!! so when you send you car off to the sand blasters watch out for cowboys.

Here is a pic of it at the panel beaters, a few mods have been carried out already.
The vents behind the rear windows have been removed, and the rear apron is being modifried to be a bolt on and bolt off type.
Roof and rear panels also done...

This photo is about 3 weeks old, you can see the "cut outs" for the inlets of the type 4, as mine are a bit custom, and also the a start of
the widning of the guard, about 50mm useing and old guard to get a smooth profile.

thats a wicked setup
i like the type4 going into a resto cal bug.
i am a fan of the t4 too, although my funds dont stretch to a 2366 just yet, cos i wanna be able to afford the rest of my car.
good to see someone in nz on the forum and someone with good taste over there too.
too many people driving jap crap pocket rockets over there. turbo lancers, twin turbo subis, turbo toyotas and other 80s crap thats tasteless.
(sorry i do kinda like the twin turbo subis)
but damn, can t beat a big t4.
great work, but i wish i could see all the pics

The strut towers have been finnished, they now hold a castor adjustable solid spherical ball mounting plate, from a BMW (Aftermarket) and have
brought the camber closer to where it should be.

Hello,
yeah it's great to see that there is a few Kiwi's here!
The single cab in the garage is mine, and I am welding it back together to use as a daily driver, with a type 4 2.0 ltr to push it. I have another
thread going on that one also, but it has not been updated for a while also (It will be in the next few days!)
I have not heard of the guy in Hamilton... interesting..... how do I get hold of him???
I hope to post some more pic's soon......!

I have the body off and at the painters now so I can show the front suspension in it's full. As I was looking back on it the other pics and they
did not fully show what was really going on.

Did you have to do any mods to the hub / stub axle ? ie did you use the original bottom ball joint ?
