Having Trouble!

Just got back from the snow and took the bug for a 2 hour street drive....With the thermos on air intake temp was 10 degrees most of the time, boosting hard at 2800 revvs. The trouble I am having is whenever you accelerate through second and come on boost.....I loose traction. I took my mate for a spin and I cannot punch it in first at all or it sits and smokes, and second has to be gradual or the back starts to go! :D:o:)

The rubber is probably a bit hard on the rear, I will have to put on something with a bit of grip, as this is the only thing hampering me turning up the boost to 18psi.

I actually have just leapt another one of those huge hurdles the conversion gods keep throwing my way. 2 weeks ago driving into my street, and the engine starts to rattle....bad!
It is coming from the right rocker. I pull it off to find a rocker floating around in there. Seems the lifter flush that is recommended at every service on our engines was probably never done. The lifter has stuck down and allowed the rocker to simply fall out!
Of course the rocker has to get jammed between the bottom cam and the head and crack it. I was just about to toss the whole thing in the bin and demand another motor from the supplier....although a nice guy on the liberty forums swapped me 2 complete heads for a bottle of Jack and we replaced the bottom cam(damaged), rocker and the end seals and here we are. I figure the best I can do is to now give this motor the hell it has given me till it blows, as I was going to get another engine anyway.

USE THE FLUSH KIDS.

Smoking the rear tires at will must be a real problem. Don't know if I could live with that.

I just bought a VOS chip off ebay for my RA engine. They reckon about 300bhp with this! My excuse is that is is mapped for 95 octane fuel rather than the jap 100RON stuff that the stock ECU expects :spin:

Apparently the oil flush and the decoking of the intake and valves is essential to these engines...maybe because of the configuration.....Anyway you can get them both from subaru. The oil flush is usually put in just before the oil change and then the car is briefly fun and the oil dropped. The other is a leave in for about 14 hours of driving then a change(from an autoshop).
Well worth doing, especially if its recommended at every service. The decoking is just spraying the stuff in a vacuum line and then watch the white smoke pour out the exhaust for 5 mins.

Apparently they all are.....maybe the horizontally opposed configuration doesnt let them drain quick enough and they sludge up.

Since the flush and some carbi cleaner sprayed into the manifold.......it is faster again. Ridiculous I say. Only 9 pounds and will spin wheels in second any time you flatten 2nd gear at about 40-50kmh..I have spun on boost in 3rd a couple of times also. I am going to hook a second switch to the boost controller so it has 12-14 psi as I take 3rd, which will be alot of fun.

Matt,
is it more likely the problem with the lifter was because the engine had sat for a long time before you bought it?

Possibly Jenny...the history is also unknown, so who knows if it was ever serviced. The lifter sludging is common, so for $8 put the flush through to be safe. The other problem with the earlier ones is the gallery in the middle of the lifter is too small and can clog..thus the noisy top ends and in the rs liberty..the recall for wrx heads.

I got me some Pirelli dragons on the back yesterday. Was told they will not slip in the dry or the wet.....BIG CALL I SAY! They are not worn in yet as I have only driven 5kms home, although I spun them evey time I felt like it.

Hi Matt, yep still lighting up the 165 MXV's. Finally I think sorted the ECU prob today and is running very smoothly apart from not working out why the ECU wont turn on the Thermos? She is quite scary when boost comes on, skipped one lane on Parra Rd this afternoon when taking it too far. Went straight home and changed my underwear.

Waiting on my new wheels and tyres this week, brakes need to go on and trying to work out what shocks to use (or afford!)

Good to hear.....check how you have the relays for the thermos hooked up..ie is the switch a power or a neagtive. The computer will probably earth the siwtch in the relay which is powered, which will then allow the mains power from the battery to run the fans. Alot of people think the computer sends the power, which it can do on occasions, although much easier to earth a wire than run power through the ecu.

Matt, not sure whats wrong, Pete Mc told me about the earthed switch. So I have power from battery in, direct earth to chassis, power out to thermo from accessory terminal and the ECU Fan wire going to the Switch terminal??

The guy who did my loom told me not to bother with the factory ECU thermo switch. He's done lots of conversions and he said the ECU thermo switch always gave him trouble. My thermos are switched by a completely seperate Davies Craig set-up. They come on at about 86deg and the sensor is in the top rad hose right near the rad. I know that sounds low, but the thermostat opens at 76deg, so 86 is a good way of making sure it doesn't get too hot. My model of EJ25s were bandits for head gaskets, so I'd rather be safe than sorry. Besides, on the freeway it never gets above about 83deg anyway.

If you cannot diagnose the problem the next time you look at it..... do not waste anymore time on it, as Pete says....eliminate the headache and go aftermarket. Easy install also...

ECU fan wire should go to the relay coil, as Matt said it switches the earth. The other side of the relay coil should connect to +.
The 'switch' side of the relay has one side connect to the fan and the other to +.

It gets a bit confusing when the car had aircon fitted because they had 2 fans and they are dual speed.
