Dave Butler Runs 11.690 in All Motor
Had another 4 runs last night and did a little more fine
tuning and driver practise.
12,467@113.78 bogged start & spuntyres in 1st & 2nd.
12,465@113,95 nearly stalled, then spun tyres & went right. Had to back off for a bit.
11.850@114.50 finally left the line without bogging. Shifted @ 6000 in 1st & 2nd(short).
11.690@114.77. Better 1.65 60' but still short shifted 1st & 2nd.
Still looking for some lost power, and trying to forget that
there is no boost to help, but it is all in one piece for the
Jamboree on 17th & 18th of September.
The air was very good, it got down to 34 ft relative altitude on the last run.
Car weighs 1830 lbs with me aboard (830kg) & all motor
minimum is 1750.

Would like to see what it does when it is closer to 1750lbs.

I may take some weight out, but only minor things like the standard front windscreen that still has the shattery type glass.
Most of the gains should come from keeping the engine up in the power.
In first and second it doesn't even get to peak power...same in 4th.
More time in the seat will fix that...and maybe a ratio change if funds permit.
Have 1.26 3rd and .89 4th now.
Need a 1.00 4th and possibly a 1.29 to 1.35 3rd. They are 002 style gears.
5.429 diff with 28" tyre.

I'm sure you'll find that 50!!
And according to the slide rule, that should possibly net you a 10.8-10.9@ 122mph.
But then, you already know that! |

There's not a lot to tell as yet! Pete's been busy doin other stuff, Stan's finished the machining etc.
Last time I spoke with Pete, he said he's almost finished the case. That was about a month ago, so it'll be a while yet!
Probably won't be ready for another a month or 2. So I'll just polish my Beetle in the meantime! |

Bloody good Dave, great to see it turning some nice times.
Very consistent on the terminal speed - do you expect much of a change when you stop short shifting it ?
Shame theres no decent drag VW's operating in WA right now..... must be a lovely sound, 2.7L of air cooled nastiness......

Hey Doug,
I really don't know what to expect except to say
there is probably a couple of tenths left in it.
On the minimum All Motor weight it should run 117mph
with the same power
which is lower than expected.
There are many things to investigate both with tuning and driving.
Also gearing is not ideal....too many excuses I know!

Thanks everyone for the positive input. It really spurs on the enthusiasm!
After a couple of days to think about it, I am steering towards fuel system tuning.
I have to get the shift light to come on in the gears other than 3rd, but I don't
really think that the power is hiding there...we'll see I guess.

Dave
What crank and rods do you have in your Pauter?
Do you still have that Billet crank that you manufactured youself? If you do, should post a pic to show your machining skills!
Also what valve size do you run, and I guess they'd be longer than T1 standard length? |

Craig,
The crank is a billet 82mm flanged superlite made in
Australia and finished at Crankshaft Eng. but not by me.
I still have my 90mm crank that will bolt in for 2965cc
and the extra compression that always comes with extra
capacity. A good upgrade for later!
The rods are currently 5.7" eagles to siut 2.1" chev bearings and gudgeon pins.
The 90mm crank has carrillos but they are heavyer.
My spare engine has brand new Pauter billet rods and another 82.5mm stroke billet
crank that I finished last year.
Next time you drop by work you can photo it...you will be amazed how chunky
I made it for blower use!
Current valves are 52.8 inlet and 40.6 exhaust.
Spare engine has 54 and 40.6...Titanium of course!
Lengths are around 5.05"

That 90mm crank in your pauter block, damn near 3L!!!!!!!
Top it off with those big Titanium valves!!
Love to see that in your tube car!!!!!!:thumb
