34 ICT's / Baby Dell's on a 1.8 type 4
People,
Just a long term planning question - When I finally get around to building up my 62 Baja, I have a 1.8 type 4 already upright converted to stick in
it. The question is would a single 40 DCNF weber or dual 34 ICT's / baby dell's be better suited to the engine ?
When I had the 1.8 in my 67 green bug (RIP) it always had a flat spot, running the 40 DCNF with 009 (this was before I knew about the evils of
009's), and am wondering if the 34 ICT's might not be a bit more responsive in the bottom end - it wont be a screamer by any stretch of the
imagination, the rest of the engine is stock, just recoed heads and away we go.
Thoughts ?
And finally, I seem to remember that the 34ICT's fit on solex manifolds..... they were heading for dads bug on shorty type 3 manifolds, but he has a
progressive now. Would the 1.7L type 4 solex manifolds be the best choice for the 34 ICT's ?
Cheers, and thanks in advance,
Doug

Would have thought 34ICTs would be way too small for a 1.8 T4
The width of the T4 and lack of heat make them unsuitable for singles.
Either modify the stock or webers
Anyway - you HAVE a set of webers there doing nothing.
Use them.
This is a "project"?? - yes??
It isnt a daily driver??
So it is the PERFECT time to learn about setting up and jetting carbs without worrying it needs to be going for the next day
Futue te ipsum!!!

I thought you might say that barry..... and true enough too. Although my old man is building a stroker and I think they are slated for that......
Actually I never really thought about the IDF's - probably as they are sitting on T1 manifolds right now.....
The 34's came off of a 1600 kombi, which is what made me think they might have been better for bottom end response. I dont know how hard jets would
be to find either. Are you thinking too small based on venturi size or jet size or just overall ?
Are they more suited to a 1600 then ?
It is most definetely a project - long term project
How difficult is it to setup the standard solex's on an upright motor ? the linkage would be 100% different wouldnt it ?
Not keen on Kadrons, as I dont have a spare pair mainly, and not real keen on the DCNF either.... it just looks messy as the throttle cable goes the
wrong way and needs an annoying extension....

What did you do with the linkages barls ?
I think if I looked hard enough I might be able to find the solex we pulled off of it 5 years ago.......
How does it drive ? Did you use a 009 or do the solex's give you a vacuum signal ?

i used the stock linkage the first time with a 009 and it will be modified to fit the car better this time plus it was bent in the crash. im still
running the 009 despite what everyone says about them, cause hey they work for me as well as the progressive webber but thats a different story.
drives like a dream i think the only thing we did was shift the pull point over to the left to match the bug cable. could of run a stock distributer
but decided against it as it was some thing else we were going to have to put in along with the brake boaster hose and the flash lube lines. i might
have a pic some where but its not likely as i didnt get any taken before the crash of the car

yeah I know I'm just a wuss
Thanks Barls - I'll have look and see if I still have all the old kombi carbs and linkage somewhere. Sounds like the best solution. I know what you
are talking about with moving the pull point (my fuzzy memory thinks it remembers anyway).
Are the carbies different between 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 ?
