Yeah ok. 2 carbs & oil leaks. Been down that costly yellow-brick road covered with oil drops. Getting lots of valuable info from this site which will help with my money pit. REX has shown me the light.

Just sussing out some options. Got a notch recently, and the engine has new heads and Pistons/cylinders but cylinders 2 and 4 are leaking at the head badly. I pulled the engine out today and I found one of the head stud nuts off completely, it was even jamming the plug lead on the plug. I am hoping I can get it back together cheaply, with a subaru swap in mind for future plans. Does the hell notch have an early swing rear subframe converted to IRS ? Any photos you feel like taking would be great.

The car is IRS. Jeff Unwin never built a serious circuit car without IRS. I believe the best scenario is to do an IRS conversion on the early subframe coz you need the chassis horns to support the motor properly.

no it's not the converted swing axle sub frame. the car was purchased like that from the original builder, but if Jeff had his choice it would have been a converted one.

29mm torsion bars, 26mm rear sway bar. STIFF!!

Amazer had a converted one for sale a while back, he may still have it.

when we converted my sisters early notch to late frame, we used the original late engine support cross bar and brackets welded to the body in normal location, but for rex conversion, for sure go the converted frame

How much vibration do you get back through the car by having the bars connected to the body and to the engine via the link bars, ie no nolathane (spelling) bushes dampening the vibration.

How is your Subaru conversion going, I have had a look for a progress thread but couldnt find one. Any chance you have some pics you could post in a thread an talk us through the conversion.

Thanks,

Wayne.

Pete, I dont disagree. I am not a fan of the factory Type 3 IRS setup. I am trying to source a spare early swinger sub frame to convert to IRS, I could convert the one in the car, but would prefer to tacle the whole job, brakes and all then just slot it in when finished. I have a lead on '73 wagon brakes, bigger caliper and bigger drums. I have these on my '67 beetle already and they work great. Before I commit to them, can any one find a reason they would be unsuitable (yes I know 4 wheel disks are better but just keeping it simple at this stage) from a legal engineering standpoint. Are they a substantial enough upgrade to satisfy an engineer for a Subaru EJ20T conversion ? Is there any kind of mandatory requirement to fit rear disks ?

I have a long list of cars to convert , however as my first car wa a notch, so it is only natural thatI would want to stick a subaru motor in one. A 356 is the other plan.

I am so looking forward to pulling up next to a wrx powered bug and have both of us dissapear up the road in the click of your fingers. It would just spin people out!

I am going to make up a couple of dummy engines out of foam, then glass over the top of them and lend them out for fitting purposes. Bit lighter than the original.
Keep the conversions coming boys....

don't be standing on the go peddle too hard, 29 p.s.i boost makes it kind of toey!!!!(you might be able to see the turnbuckles holding the intercooler on) and be wary when it gets some grip, a few second later your doing 128km/h, before changing up to third, which dissapears another couple of seconds later at 185km/h, fourth is gone in about 4 seconds when it hits 260 km/h!!

close the lid at the end of the day!, it will still start after 30 seconds cranking, a couple of years later:thumb

theres no interior in the car at all, so it's all swooshing and whistling, as well as the straight cut gears in the 2L box.

I have the same kind of bar set up in my engine bay. works beautifully removing the torque twist out of the motor although there may be a few more vibrations than normal but not as bad as what you would first think.

Jak just welded a 4mm skid plate on his, I made my first one when I went over a crest and hit the gas and ground a hole next to the sump plug.

I get the top plates water jet cut, then weld the sump section on. I am making a couple next week, once the kombi is out the door.
